Hi, I’m Jackie! I graduated from U.C. Berkeley magna cum laude with a bachelor in science in environmental science, policy, and management. I went on to receive a master’s in science degree in Fisheries from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. I have experience teaching science, particularly biology, marine biology, conservation biology, and ecology, at numerous levels and age groups. I’ve taught marine science and conservation at grade school level while working as an instructor at the Catalina Island Marine Institute (CIMI). I have taught biology and ecology to Univerisity of Alaska undergraduates as a teaching assistant during graduate school. Additionally, I have experience educating the general public on a variety of science topics while working as a naturalist, science museum educator, and aquarium educator. My recent career switch to veterinary medicine as a registered veterinary nurse familiarized me with medical terminology and hands-on clinical experience. This knowledge and skill-set, combined with my long-standing work and teaching background in biological sciences, makes me a good fit for vet students seeking study guidance, as well as for undergraduates in the zoological and environmental fields.
I recognize that science is easier to understand when it’s explained well, made interesting, and when students are given chances to ask questions. Regardless of the teaching environment I found myself in, I most enjoyed the opportunities to work one on one with students to help them learn, and felt that’s where I excelled the most. I will help students discover their learning strengths and work with dedication to guide them toward a greater understanding of the biological sciences.
