Are you a student who is frustrated with losing points on your essays due to mistakes with grammar and punctuation? Do you need to have a term paper or essay proofread or edited before you hand it in to your professor? Is English your second language and expressing your thoughts in an essay is difficult for you? With two teaching credentials (Multiple-Subject and English) and a Masters in Education as well as a Masters of Art in Educational Administration, I can help. English is my passion! I have been a teacher (elementary, junior high, and high school) and tutor (primary, junior high, high school, and college) for twenty years; and I worked as a legal secretary for ten years where strong business writing skills are a must. I also taught a business writing workshop for adults at a local organization for three years. My hours to meet with you are flexible; but if you prefer to send me your essay via e-mail, I can proofread/edit your work with Track Changes and return it to you very quickly. I enjoy helping students who need that extra tweaking to make their essays great! If you prefer online lessons, I am available to pursue that format with you also.

Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

As a second grade teacher at a parochial school in Encino, I taught phonics, reading, and English for five years and currently enjoy tutoring the younger learners who are just starting to make sense of written language. I also work with older students who have difficulty comprehending literature and textbook material and who are frustrated with essay composition. I have been a junior high teacher at the same school for two years and currently teach junior high English, Science, Study Skills, Religion and preparation for the High School Entrance Exam. I have a multiple-subject teaching credential, a credential in English, and a Masters in Education.
English

English

As an English teacher/tutor of elementary, middle, high school, and adult students, I help them understand the importance of writing well. I work with my students to structure their sentences so that they are meaningful, interesting, and that they, above all, make sense. My enthusiasm for English is very evident with my students; and I use every approach I can to show that, with a little imagination, they can become great writers!
Grammar

Grammar

Grammar is an essential part of good writing; and good grammar skills assist with reading as well. Students who struggle with reading can benefit from improved grammar skills in their comprehension and fluidity. Correct grammar enhances the written word so that it is better understood by the reader and assists with expansion and clarity of the message. I would be happy to assist all types of writers with essays, reports, theses, scripts, novels, etc.
Phonics

Phonics

As a second grade teacher, I taught phonics, reading, and English for five years and currently enjoy tutoring the younger learners who are just starting to make sense of written language. I also work with older students who may be having difficulty with reading and comprehension. I have a multiple-subject teaching credential and a credential in English, as well as a Masters in Education.
Proofreading

Proofreading

I tell my students to always proofread their work before handing it in to the teacher. It is a necessary skill for good writing; and even in this age of spell check and other aids offered by our computers, knowing how to proofread can benefit your own criticism of your writing and improve your work product. Proofreading is something I really enjoy; in fact, in comes very naturally to me. When I was a legal secretary, my boss depended on my skills as a proofreader for any legal documents he prepared. Let me proofread your work for you. It is always helpful to have a second set of eyes examine your writing to find those errors before someone else (teacher, editor, etc.) does.
Reading

Reading

Teaching reading to primary grade students has always been a job I take very seriously. This skill is one that applies to all subjects in school and to all facets of life. As a previous school librarian, I know what books will enhance a student's interest and ease the learning struggle. I especially like to help older students who may not have mastered the skill of reading and are struggling in school due to poor comprehension in their other subjects. Helping someone feel confident about reading aloud, a skill that can be needed at any time, is also a strong priority for me.
Speech

Speech

Many of the students with whom I work, especially adults, need help with pronunciation, idioms, and usage. English is usually their second language, and they find themselves in an academic or employment situation in which these concepts are not only necessary to adequately fulfill their assignments but are also helpful in getting even better grades or improved job recognition. Presentations, business meetings/conference calls, or client/customer scenarios require proficiency in speech in order to be successfully executed.
Study Skills

Study Skills

All students can benefit from perfecting their study skills. Discovering the type of learner you are (visual, auditory, etc.) can lead to successful methods of obtaining and retaining knowledge with appropriate strategies for doing homework and studying for tests. I currently teach a very practical Study Skills course to junior high students, but many of these strategies are useful to students of all grades.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

A broad vocabulary enhances reading skills and makes writing more interesting. Studying vocabulary is not just memorizing words in a dictionary; it is understanding word origins, pronunciations, meanings, antonyms, synonyms, spelling, and usage. Yes,some words do need to be memorized; but many can be remembered or figured out by knowing prefixes and suffixes or just using a mental image that relates to the sound of the word and making a connection to its meaning. If you have a difficult time passing vocabulary tests or writing in a clear, imaginative fashion, I am sure I can help you.
Writing

Writing

English, Grammar, Proofreading, Reading, and Vocabulary are all subjects that, when used correctly, can enhance writing. When I tutor writing skills, all of these issues come into play and serve as necessary steps in effective essay, creative, and formal/informal writing. In this age of texting and short-form e-mails, it can be a challenge to be creative and enjoy writing for the sake of telling a story or to be able to answer an essay question fully and clearly for any school subject.

Excellent Educator and Person

Linda is an excellent educator. I am grateful to have such a professional, intelligent, and reliable and caring instructor. Linda worked with me during my master and doctoral programs. She helped me more way than simply enriching my basic knowledge. She thought me a technical writing structure. Linda also is a responsible and reliable person. I highly recommend Linda to everyone especially to college students in any level.

Confidence has increased

Good beginning. Linda seems to have the knowledge, background and personal skills needed to work with students. So far, so good. Update: At my daughter's last parent/teacher meeting and report card, my daughter showed improvement in most her subjects, especially in Literature/English. I think the tutoring is helping, and her confidence has increased and seems to be affecting her other subjects for the better. My daughter likes Linda and trusts her. I think it is making a difference.
