Hi, I'm Jill! I have had more than 12 years of tutoring experience in addition to 11 years of teaching at the college and university level and I'm excited to work with you in a variety of subjects. I love explaining how math and science concepts work to a student and helping them understand the world around them.
In addition to my extensive tutoring experience, I am a tenured full-time faculty at a local community college.
I have a Master's degree in geology from Arizona State University (I lived in Arizona for 9 years before moving to LA in 2014) and a Bachelor's degree in both biology and geology from the University of Western Ontario. My tutoring experience is very diversified, and includes science, math, test preparation, and English. I am also very comfortable tutoring AP Environmental Science (not listed on the list of possible subjects!) My educational background has given me excellent language and grammar skills, as well as a strong foundation in math and science. I love being able to help a student understand a subject with which they have previously struggled. I have tutored students in most math and science courses, and I am comfortable with all grade levels, from elementary school to college. If you're curious about test scores, I received a 1490 (out of 1600) on the SAT 1, 760 on the SAT II Biology, and a 800 on both the SAT II Math and Writing subject tests.
My teaching style varies according to the individual needs of the student. My main goal is to help the student become enthusiastic about the specific subject or activity, and confident in their ability to interpret what a question is actually asking. I am very flexible, and will tailor the curriculum and evaluation methods based on discussions with the student.
If you need last minute help for a test or exam I will do my best to accommodate you, however please be aware that I may charge an increased rate for short-notice scheduling. I also do group tutoring sessions, and am happy to discuss timing and rates for those with you!

Approved Subjects

ACT Math

ACT Math

Just like the SAT, the ACT is a test that requires a lot of preparation and students tend to be afraid of it. I'll go through each section with them and show them how to handle each type of problem so they are never faced with anything unexpected.
Biology

Biology

I've taken biology courses in a variety of different topics, ranging from environmental studies to genetics, with even my masters related to the field of geomicrobiology. I love helping students who are struggling understand the major concepts and being to develop an appreciation for the subject.
Chemistry

Chemistry

Chemistry is a subject that many students struggle with, and so I like to go back to the beginning and make sure the fundamentals are strong before progressing to more advanced material. I love showing students an easier way of viewing and doing a problem that they had previously had trouble with!
Ecology

Ecology

Ecology is a hard subject for most teachers, which means a lot of students struggle. My educational background is interdisciplinary in several different natural sciences, meaning I have a deep understanding of this material. Additionally I have worked on environmental issues in the real world, and can impart that knowledge to help students with some of the application based free response questions.a
Geology

Geology

As my educational background shows, I have both a bachelors and a masters in geology. I am also currently teaching Physical and Historical Geology at a local community college. This is one of favorite subjects to tutor as the majority of students need help in the same course that I'm teaching.
Piano

Piano

I have been playing the piano since I was 4 years old, and I love this instrument. I was classically trained through the Royal Conservatory of Music in Canada, and have passed my Grade 9 level examination. I have a very solid understanding of the musical theory associated with playing an instrument and I am able to incorporate that into my teaching. I have experience in teaching piano and I really enjoy being able to help students grow and learn to explore their musicality.
SAT Math

SAT Math

The SAT is a test that scares a lot of students, and for good reason! I break it down for my students on a section by section basis, and show them which areas to focus on for studying. I make sure they are familiar with all types of problems and I also show them tricks for handling some of the more difficult problems.

Great tutor!

My son has had many tutors over the years. This is the first time he came home reporting he has learned something... that says a lot to me! Jill obviously knows how to explain the material. She has been very prompt on communication and has gone out of her way to accommodate our tight schedule.

Best tutor I've had so far!

I am not overstating this. My son has A.D.D and I have had other tutors. But, the problem was they didn't care all too much in means of the success of my son. Jill, on the other hand, does an excellent job explaining and reviewing problems in a simple and concise way so that not only can my son learn the basics, but masters the material. In terms of overall grade improvement, my son has risen significantly in just as little as three weeks! I would recommend Jill to any parent who has a child struggling in math specifically algebra.

Great Tutor

Jill has been tutoring our son for around 2 months now, and every session has been extremely worthwhile. She is focused, and really helps our son be focused on a methodical approach to pre-calculus. She is also very encouraging to him and helps him get in a good mind-set to perform well on tests.
