Bio

Hi! My name is Lydia, and I taught high school math (everything from an Algebra 1 support class to AP Calculus AB plus some statistics) from 2014 to 2020, and again in the 25-26 school year.

I miss many aspects of teaching, and I am confident I can help you improve your ability to learn and study mathematics.

My ultimate goal is to make it so you don't need me anymore: I want to help you learn how to help yourself. But I know that sometimes - for whatever reason - you have a gap between where you are and where you'd like to be to meet your goals, whether that's improving your grade, passing an AP exam, or getting through one last math class in college.

I can guarantee 100% satisfaction tutoring math through AP Calculus AB. I consider myself an expert in these subjects as I have taught them.

If you're in college calculus or a higher-level math class, such as AP Calc BC, Calculus 2, or math major courses, I charge half my rate and work WITH you to learn the material. If you want someone who is 100% certain on the answers to your homework problems, I can't help you there. But I am trying to keep my skills up in these areas - math is very much "use it or lose it," and it's hard to be motivated to just study math in my free time. So if you'd like a study buddy, and are okay with some of my answers being, "I'm not sure how to do this one - you'll want to ask your professor at office hours," I would love to work with you. Contact me and let's talk - I'll work with you for a 1-2 hour session for free so you can see what this would mean and if it would help you.

My favorite tutoring location is in the Torrance area, but I am often in Inglewood and Rancho Palos Verdes. South Bay people, let's get your math skills up to snuff!

Approved Subjects

Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I taught Algebra 2 for five years, including both regular and honors versions. I know the material extremely well, and the most efficient explanations to help my students understand the topics covered in this course.
Calculus

Calculus

I taught AP Calculus for four years, leading many students to success on the exam. Calculus - AP or otherwise - is my favorite subject to tutor and teach, as there is lots of room for student intuition and understanding.
Discrete Math

Discrete Math

"Discrete" means individually separate and distinct - pretty much things you can count. You won't see the continuous functions you see in calculus, where there are infinitely many points between any two points on a given curve. This branch of mathematics includes logic, set theory, combinatorics, number theory, probability, graph theory, game theory, and much, much more. A course on discrete math is often required for computer science majors. I earned an A in this course when I took it as an undergraduate.
Geometry

Geometry

I taught two sections of geometry in CA as a student teacher, and I taught three sections of it in a three-month long-term substitute position. I have a solid understanding of not only the material, but what concepts students struggle with and how to help them "get it." My background goes even deeper than the high school level, as geometry was the field I focused on for my senior thesis in college.
Precalculus

Precalculus

I have taught precalculus, and the classes that come before and after it (Algebra 2 and AP Calculus), so I have a strong knowledge of what students need to know to succeed in this class, the common gaps students enter this class with, and which skills are the most necessary for success in calculus next.
SAT Math

SAT Math

I have tutored 4 students in SAT math now, and my knowledge of the types of questions that are asked and how best to study them is extensive. Fair warning, though: you CANNOT just meet with me once a week for a few weeks and do no studying on your own and be successful. My successful students were the ones that worked on sample questions (which are provided, I have a book from the makers of the SAT) at home so they were prepared to only spend time with me on the questions they still didn't understand after grappling with them on their own already.

Amazing Tutor!

Lydia is patient and has the skills needed to reach my daughter's learning abilities. She has been a key to my daughter's success in both science and algebra. Her grades before tutoring with Lydia were C- & D and with Lydia's help she has raised her grades to A's in both subjects. Thank you Lydia for going beyond and supporting my daughter's needs in learning. Thank you Lydia your amazing!

flexible, competent

My daughter is picky about her tutors but she had no complaints about Lydia today. She said she explained the calculus concepts well and she was able to complete her homework. I also really appreciated how Lydia was very responsive when I contacted her regarding scheduling . She also was open to seeing the work in advance so she will be more efficient when meeting with my daughter and explaining the work. I wouldn’t hesitate to have my daughter meet with Lydia again.

Great tutor

Lydia is amazing! My daughter loves the way she presents material and feels very comfortable with her. She is very dedicated and didn't even charge for a get to know her session on the first day! I would highly recommend her as a tutor.

Lydia knows her stuff and has great patience! I strongly recommend her for anyone needing help with math. I understand that she will only be in area for month or so.

Marvelous Math Tutor

My daughter loved having Lydia help her during the summer with her math review. She was easy to talk to and explained the concepts in a lax yet fun way. My daughter didn't mind doing the school work when her tutor was there assisting her.
