Hi! I’m Simon, a recent graduate of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with a B.S. in Food Science and a 3.85 GPA. My coursework gave me a strong foundation across the biological sciences, including biology, biochemistry, and anatomy. I enjoy making challenging material more approachable and would be happy to help high school and college students strengthen their understanding of these subjects.
While I am new to formal tutoring, teaching and collaborative learning have been a consistent part of my academic experience. Throughout college, I frequently organized impromptu study groups, shared and explained my lecture notes, and worked through difficult concepts and problems with classmates. These experiences taught me that I learn and teach best by first identifying where someone’s understanding breaks down, then working backward to build the concept from a foundation that makes sense. I use step-by-step reasoning, diagrams, analogies, and practice problems rather than simply providing an answer. Outside of academics, I have also taught lion dance skills and performances to peers, which has given me additional experience breaking down unfamiliar skills, demonstrating them, and adapting my instruction to different learners.
My goal as a tutor is not just to help students complete an assignment or prepare for an exam, but to help them understand why an answer makes sense and develop strategies they can use independently. I know firsthand that difficult science courses can become much more manageable with the right explanation and support, and I aim to create a patient environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. Whether you need help reviewing a difficult concept, working through practice problems, or preparing for an upcoming exam, feel free to reach out and tell me what you’re working on!
