I have been a literacy specialist and reading intervention teacher for 12 years, working both for a local school district and tutoring students individually. I was a classroom teacher for 7 years, teaching first, second, fifth and sixth grades, before I found my calling as a reading specialist. I hold a multiple subject teaching credential and a Reading and Literacy Added Authorization from the state of California. I have extensive training in the Science of Reading from the AIM Institute for Learning and Research in providing an Orton Gillingham based structured literacy program for students struggling in reading or with dyslexia.

I found my calling when I began a position 12 years ago as a Title 1 teacher and reading and math interventionist at the elementary school level, working with students in small groups or individually at each grade between Kindergarten through 6th in reading, math, and English language development. I became extremely interested in the science of reading at this time and set out to learn all I could to teach students experiencing reading difficulties.

There are five essential components of a successful reading curriculum following the tenants from the science of reading. These are phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. As an instructor in reading, I provide a thorough assessment for your child of their reading skills and then provide a structured literacy program which is designed to meet your child's unique needs.

I look forward to hearing from you and working with your child.

Common Core

Common Core

I am qualified to teach the Common Core State Standards based on my education and experience. I have studied the Common Core State standards in reading in my recent classes I completed for the Reading and Literacy Added Authorization to my California Credential. In addition to those courses, I have taught lessons using the Common Core standards in reading in my work as an intervention specialist in an elementary school. I also have experience with the Common Core Standards in math, as I have been working with the Go Math program at the elementary level, which is a math program adopted by the school district where I work.
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I have many years of experience at the elementary level. I was a teacher for 7 years, teaching 1st, 2nd, 5th, and 6th grades. In the last 3 years I have worked at an elementary school as an intervention specialist, where I work with students needing tutoring in math and reading at all grade levels from K-5.
Homeschool

Homeschool

I am a credentialed teacher, holding a multi-subject teaching credential as well as the reading and literacy added authorization credential. I have worked at the elementary level for 7 years at many grade levels, and as an intervention specialist for 3 years teaching math and reading intervention classes. I am qualified to teach homeschool students at the elementary level in any subject, as I have experience teaching all subjects in an elementary school classroom.
Phonics

Phonics

I have been teaching phonics for many years. I currently teach phonics to Kindergarten, first and second grade students in my position as a reading and math Intervention Specialist at an Elementary school. I teach phonemic awareness, as well as phonics skills such as sounding out CVC words and words with blends. With my students I use a program called SIPPS, which stands for Systematic Instruction in Phonological Awareness, Phonics, and Sight Words. I also have had additional training in teaching phonics through the reading certificate program I am currently in at UCSD Extension.

Very knowledgeable and organized

Laura has been tutoring my twins in 2nd grade math. She has been doing an amazing job, and brings a lot of helpful tools to each session, including erase boards to work problems, and extra worksheets. She has a ton of teaching experience and has really made a difference!
