About Ali

Bio

Hi, I'm Ali. I went from community college to UCLA where I majored in Mathematics, and recently completed graduate research on the brain and cognition in Paris. But the most important thing I learned along the way was how to actually learn. I struggled with imposter syndrome and focus throughout my education, and it took real effort to discover the value of learning strategies, active participation, and knowing when to ask for help. That journey is why I love tutoring.

I have been tutoring since community college in both group and individual settings, working with students from middle school through college. I got my start holding supplemental instruction sessions for my statistics professor at Riverside City College, and have since worked privately with students across a range of subjects and levels. My strongest areas are high school mathematics including Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Calculus, as well as the sciences including Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.

While I offer strategies to help performance on metrics such as exams and grades, what I care about most is helping students understand concepts intuitively rather than just memorizing procedures. I ask a lot of questions and try to meet students where they are, figuring out together what works for them. I am patient, I genuinely enjoy the subjects I teach, and I believe that almost anyone can grasp difficult material with the right framing and enough time.

The word "school" originally comes from Ancient Greek "skhole" (σχολn), roughly denoting leisurely free time for discussion. This is the philosophy I strive to maintain in my sessions.
