Hello! I'm Raquel A, a proud UCLA Bruin with a Bachelor's degree in English, Master's in Teaching Writing from Johns Hopkins University, and a single-subject teaching credential in English. Over the past decade, I’ve had the privilege of working closely with students in both one-on-one in-home settings and at tutoring centers. Although my degrees are in English, I have had over ten years of experience tutoring in math -- including K-6th grade math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Geometry and Algebra 2.
Whether I’m helping a middle schooler tackle a math problem or guiding a high schooler through an analytical essay, I aim to make each session a space where students feel supported, capable, and heard.
My approach to tutoring is centered on meeting students where they are. I believe learning builds best when it starts from what a student already knows and feels comfortable with. From there, I model strategies clearly, break down complex ideas, and guide students through problems step by step. I then give students space to try things on their own, offering feedback and encouragement. Students I’ve worked with often tell me they appreciate my patience and my upbeat energy. I work hard to make learning feel less intimidating and more like a shared challenge we can conquer together.
I have experience working with a wide range of learners—from general education students to those in Gifted and STEAM Magnet programs—and I specialize in English Language Arts and math. I look forward to helping students not only succeed but also discover that learning can be meaningful, manageable, and even fun!
