About Kenneth

As a graduate with highest honors and distinction in the English major and History minor from UC Santa Barbara, I have extensive experience with crafting exceptional essays and comprehending challenging texts. This experience applies not only to my own academic skills, but to my ability to help others achieve their full academic and written potential. I understand which methods work for getting students to learn and engage, and that those methods are often different for different people. I believe that everyone has the potential to express great ideas, but that sometimes people just need a little help with communicating those ideas!

At UCSB, I served for two years as an Arnhold Research Program Mentor, a role in which I tutored lower year members of the program on writing, presenting, and research. I also served as an upper division preceptor in a Reacting to the Past class, in which I further mentored students on research and writing in addition to key history skills like using primary sources. Furthermore, throughout college, I collaboratively edited and wrote a wide array of papers and fictional pieces for classes and projects, not to mention blogs, magazines, and newspapers. In each case, I ensured to not corrupt the original ideas of the piece with ideas of my own, and instead to help the writer's true voice ring out with the best clarity of idea possible. My favorite thing about tutoring is that moment when an idea is clarified or clicks; when that gold nugget buried in a student's brain comes to the surface, polished to a beautiful sheen through their writing or studies, ready to be turned in as a project or applied to a test. I would hope to help uncover the gold inside of any of the students I tutor!

My awards and scores are a testament to my English abilities. I graduated with Highest Honors, the Dean of Undergraduate Education Award, English Honors, Distinction in the Major, the Academic Excellence Award, Letters & Sciences Honors 2012-2016, Dean's Honors 2012-2016, and as a member of the distinguished Phi Beta Kappa honor society. I wrote an independent research thesis and independent poster presentation on English literature, while also writing extensively for campus publications and leisure. Before college, I attained a 2260 SAT score, with a perfect 800 on writing, and an understanding of how the SAT is not a measurement of intelligence as much as it is a unique "game," though not a fun one, with its own rules, tricks, templates, and tips. After college, I redirected my test-taking skills to conquer the GRE Literature.

If you want enthralling essays, history help, a literary leg-up, or college admissions advice, let me know! I am happy to help and available most weekday afternoons and evenings, and some weekends as well. Contact me for more information, and to schedule a lesson!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I graduated from UC Santa Barbara as an English major. In addition to receiving highest honors, I graduated with English honors and distinction in the major after completing an independent thesis. As an English major I read complex literature daily and engaged in rigorous reading comprehension activity, reflected by my high SAT and pGRE scores in that area.

SAT Writing

I scored an 800 on the SAT Writing, the highest score one can receive. Since then, as a distinguished graduate in the English major, I have only improved my writing skills. My academic and creative writing has been exceptionally received by my peers and former professors, and shall hopefully continue to be lauded as I enter graduate school for English next year.

I am a lifelong writer in multiple formats, academic, creative, news, poetry, and online among them. I scored an 800 on the SAT Writing in college, and have extensive experience working through essays with students to iron out mistakes and clarify ideas. My experiences as a English major, such as writing an independent research thesis and editing an academic literary journal, have served to augment my abilities.
