I currently work as a Spanish teacher in a private school, but I've been tutoring Spanish since 2012. My experience as a Spanish tutor has been diverse because I have taught all ages. Also, my students come from different cultural backgrounds which have made my teaching more interesting. I have learned that students may have different reasons to learn a foreign language. Some students want to learn Spanish to advance as professionals. Other students want to improve their grades. Parents of elementary school children want their children to learn another foreign language because their public Elementary school does not have an immersion program. My objective is for students to communicate with me and with each other in Spanish. I feel great when my students begin to ask and answer each other in Spanish, and when I see their interest in learning about holidays, such as Day of the Dead. I think that what I like about being a teacher is the moments that I share with my students since I have also been growing in various aspects as a teacher and as a person.
I was born and raised in a Spanish speaking country, in which I lived for 22 years. I came to this country to attend college, so I know by first hand the challenges that someone needs to go through as a foreign language learner. I started teaching Spanish in after school programs using a methodology to teach children as they would learn it at home. This experience helped me a lot in teaching vocabulary to students even when I teach my classes online. I also teach grammar by doing different activities to cover the passive and active aspects of language (listening, speaking, reading, writing). My goal as a teacher is to learn what kind of learners my students are, so my students become more involved in their learning process.
