My name is Sahasra and I am a recent high school graduate and am currently a freshman at San Jose State University. During middle and high school, I used to struggle with certain subjects in school, specifically math, which would leave me questioning my abilities. I would have a hard time understanding my teachers' explanation of the topic during class. Getting a tutor was a turning point for me, I found their succinct and clear explanation far simpler to understand. Having complex concepts broken down into more manageable steps helped me a lot. It also inspired me to want to help other struggling students in the same way because I know what a big difference a good tutor can make in building confidence.
During high school I consistently made the honor roll and joined National Honor Society. As part of NHS, I tutored other high school students one-on-one for multiple years. Additionally, as an Eagle Scout I have earned nearly volunteer 100 hours. I have also held many leadership positions during my time as a Scout which involved teaching skills to younger Scouts (ages 11-15) in a group and one-on-one setting.
My approach to teaching is one that I learned during my time in Scouting which is called the EDGE method. EDGE stands for explain, demonstrate, guide, and enable. By slowing introducing a new skill or concept to the person I am teaching, it breaks down a daunting task into a more doable one.
My own experiences with overcoming my academic challenges have given a new appreciation for the impact of patient and clear teachers and I look forward to helping others in the same way in the future!
