About Ms. Tara

Hello... It's a pleasure to meet you. Though relatively new to Wyzant, I have a wealth of experience as a tutor and teacher. I work in any setting.

With a B.A. From Tufts in dance and Special Education Credential from California State Northridge, I have developed a wealth of interactive fun lessons for teaching in any setting, including online, that are tailored for each student's needs.

Over the years I've helped students with remedial tutoring, those who require accommodations, assisted many gifted students, and helped achieve goals on 504 plans. Having developed IEPs (Individual Educational Programs), and transitional programs, I am able to smoothly advocate for your child. I provide remedial tutoring and challenging activities to homeschool students. I am patient, kind, funny, happy and very interested in every student. (Yes, I have a student fan club!)

As a certificated Educational Specialist, I am authorized to evaluate and assess and State-qualified to review your IEP, meet or work with professional service providers and to coordinate all aspects of a student's learning. I work with children who have mild or moderate disabilities such as autism, dyslexia, ADD and other impairments, learning styles that need special care, especially kinesthetic learners (who learn by doing). Many of my students are gifted and I specialize in developing these gifts. All students can expect success.

Additionally, I am authorized and specifically trained to teach English as a second language, and I am a reading specialist who has been successful teaching students with dyslexia. In Mathematics, I teach the fundamentals for students to apply throughout their lives and I have taught students with dyscalcula, helping them to achieve mathematical skills despite this challenge.

Online, I have taught students from across the USA and overseas. Locally, I have taught students all over the San Gabriel Valley. I have passed the Reading Instruction Competency Assessment (RICA), California Subject Examination for Teachers (CSET) and all other related qualifications. Also, I am a certified Autism Movement Therapist, teaching movement and dance to students with special needs. I am the author of several books and teaching materials.

Here is a comment from a student:

"Without tutoring I don’t think I would have known how to use mathematics to solve everyday problems and prepare for my career. Thank you, Ms. Tara" - Grade 11, mathematics

I could fill a book with the voices of happy students who are learning. Let one be yours.

Thank you for considering me to be your tutor and I look forward to servicing you.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

As a graduate of Tufts University and a teacher or tutor for many years, I have gained a wealth of experience in working with teenagers who have ADD or other learning challenges. Currently, I am working on my special education teaching credential and Masters degree.

My methods involve testing the student to discover what type of learning method is best. Most ADD/ADHD students are kinesthetic learners in my experience, which means they require movement and real life examples to grasp the material with full understanding.

I teach the fundamentals of each subject with application in real life. I also teach how to study/coping skills in school for ADD/ADHD students. I also teach vocabulary /key words of each subject using the study style that best applies for the student. This gives the student a real advantage. When needed, I provide remedial or "catch up" tutoring for the ADD student including English and mathematics.

At this time I am accepting only 3 students at a time, please contact me right away.

As a professional in the field of special education, I work with students who have Aspergers (also known as high functioning autism or mild-moderate ASD). Using only evidence based (proven) teaching methods I address all aspects of a student's development. This includes social, emotional, artistic and physical health as well as academic knowledge based on the common core standards for English Language Arts and Mathematics. I am one of few teachers who are trained in the most up-to-date research-based practices in each of these subjects. Generally, I work with elementary students but I’m also a qualified and experienced tutor for middle and high school students. With structured lessons, I teach using the learning style(s) of each individual student (kinesthetic, visual, auditory or tactile) and teach study skills. As one of very few educators who are skilled all of these aspects of development, a student who has ASD can be comfortable to discover his or her unique abilities and develop new skills. I follow the direct instruction model, which is an evidence based best teaching practice. To explain all of this in simpler words, I speak the language of the children, understand their particular interests and needs, explain and model the skill patiently, step-by-step, then we practice over and over until they've got it. My caring and respectful rapport with each student improves the ability to achieve set goals.

Currently a graduate student in special education, I have completed courses and practicum on teaching students with mild-moderate autism spectrum disorder (ASD). As needed, I can provide recommendations from my professors and master teachers who comment that I have a particularly excellent rapport with exceptional students. My methods include individually tailored lesson plans aligned with the Common Core standards that are given after assessing student's needs and learning style.

Hello, it is a pleasure to meet you.
I am a student at Northridge University working on my special education credential and master's degree. My area of focus is mild/moderate disabilities K-age 22. I have an excellent rapport with students who have learning disabilities including dyslexia. My students receive individually prepared lessons to help them access the Common Core Curriculum for any subject taught in school. I have completed courses and practicum in teaching students with dyslexia and have tutored and worked with children diagnosed with dyslexia. I am skilled at visually and kinesthetically teaching information with prepared lesson plans and using technology as a teaching tool, though my teaching style is based on student's individual needs.

Elementary (K-6th)

I hold a Bachelor of Arts from Tufts University and completed my credential studies at California State Northridge in the field of special education/teaching.I have passed all subject matter tests and most of my credential work and specialize in Elementary education.

As a private school teacher (lower, middle and high school), I have made many friends among students and parents. Also, I have completed over 1,000 hours of one-on-one tutoring in mathematics, English language, grammar and science. Students enjoy learning with me because I teach how each subject applies to everyday life and because I help them define and achieve their goals. I am especially good working with individuals who have learning challenges of any kind as well as remedial (catch up) in mathematics.

Also, because of my extensive experience in the Arts, I am particularly skilled in helping students who are artistically inclined (writing, design, dance, acting, etc).

Please let me know what you need so I can help!

I have recently passed the RICA which is the California State Standard test for teachers of Reading. I am learning and applying multi sensory education (Orton-Gillingham) in a second grade classroom as an education specialist under a master teacher.

Public Speaking

Hello. I am a graduate from Tufts University in Boston where I completed my undergraduate studies in the Performing Arts. I am an accomplished actress with many awards in Public Speaking (Forensics/speech). I have performed in front of hundreds of people and I am very comfortable teaching Public Speaking. I can help you with diction (how to pronounce), for example if you have an accent I will teach you how to pronounce so you can be easily understood. I can also help you overcome stage fright, which is an issue for many people. I can help you drill your speech so you are perfect and comfortable in any situation. I am also a dance teacher who can help you with posture, grace and appearance in public. I am also a professional writer with many years experience in composing speeches, scripts, web copy, ads, e-books and much more.
I am an excellent teacher, coming from a family history of 200 years of teachers, I am very kind and patient and confident, so I can assist you in any aspect of public speaking to increase your skills and confidence.

Special Needs

I hope you will be one of my 3 students I am accepting at this time.

Currently, I am working on my teaching credential and Masters Degree in Special Education (mild-moderate multiple subjects K-age 22). My thesis is on the methods of Educational Kinesthesiology (learning for the 60% of students who comprehend visually and with movement rather than just words and symbols). As a graduate student, I have passed all basic examinations for teaching, received all clearances such as background check and I am familiar with Special Needs students and their requirements.

As an author I have written and composed materials for teens and young adults. Moreover, I have spent hundreds upon hundreds of challenging and successful hours tutoring English, vocabulary and mathematics and science fundamentals to students who required remedial help and who were in high stress situations or students who had learning disabilities.

Because of my graduate curricula I am also a tutor who specializes in certain mental challenges such as ADD/ADHD, autism, bi polar or others. You may please see my specific page on these.

With a very firm grounding in all of the arts and sciences, I can teach the fundamentals of mathematics including the natural and physical sciences. I am somewhat of a language expert having studied Latin, English and Spanish and I am a poet with a background in the arts including design, music, theater and dance. My Bachelor’s of the Arts is from Tufts University in Boston with classes at Harvard and Woodbury Universities.

Attain your full potential with a Personal Curriculum including Lesson/Learning Plans. The Personal Curriculum is approved by the parent/guardian and may be coordinated with any existing written plans (IEPs) or other professionals working with you/your child for an integrated learning experience.

Your cost is $45/hour plus any supplies required. You/your child will make great strides in skills achievement and a positive surge in life. You can expect a desire to learn more.

Ability Testing is provided free of charge before and after.

I am accepting only 3 students so please get in touch as soon as possible if you are interested. Tell me what you hope to achieve.

Study Skills

After graduating from Tufts University in Liberal Arts, I worked for several years in various learning centers and positions in a teaching capacity specifically tutoring study skills and how to learn. Currently I am working on my Masters degree in Education at Cal State Northridge (CSUN). I've also been a teacher in private school and I've taught various life skills to adults in a professional/business setting.

Methods used: I discover the learning style that works for the student and focus on a) developing vocabulary in the area of focus b) identification and solid learning of the fundamentals of that subject c) application of the subject to real life. Where needed, I provide remedial education. When needed, I also assist in the development of the student's desire and purpose for learning.

With these skills any student can learn any subject and become competent to their highest potential.

I am very interested in working with students one-on-one during my graduate program and I am accepting 3 students at this time. Please contact me as soon as possible.
