I graduated cum laude from Musicians Institute in 2016 (BA in Guitar Performance) and in 2023 (AA in Audio Engineering). Hi, I'm Kevin! I've been playing guitar for over 20 years, and I love to play and teach music. I graduated cum laude from Musicians Institute in 2016 (BA in Guitar Performance) and in 2023 (AA in Audio Engineering). I love to play a wide variety of different styles, but my favorites are blues, classic R&B, funk, New Orleans funk and R&B, jazz, Latin, fingerstyle guitar, and 90s rock.

I've been working at Musicians Institute as a performance faculty member since 2019, where I teach & tutor students in reading notation, ear training, and music theory. I also teach guitar, bass, & ukulele through several private lesson companies in the SoCal region.

I love to help students develop their musicality and guitar playing. As an instructor, my job is to guide students on their musical journey. Whether students view music as a fun hobby or aspire to play professionally, my aim is to focus their attention on the methods of playing and practice that will enable them to accomplish their goals. While much of the learning process takes place outside of the classroom (rehearsals, practice sessions, etc), a music instructor's job is to shine a light on the path students must walk and equip them with the tools they need to flourish on their musical journey.

As an experienced instructor, I believe music education plays a vital role in the development of essential communication and critical thinking skills that students need in order to solve complex problems with empathy and intellect. Learning an instrument improves not only self-discipline, patience, and self-confidence, but also enables students to achieve personal growth. My goal is to make lessons informative, fun, and engaging so that my students develop not only a passion for music, but also the self-confidence and self-discipline they need to succeed in life, both on and off the bandstand.

I would love to help you achieve your musical goals. Contact me today about booking and let's schedule a lesson!

Ear Training

Ear Training

As a teaching assistant at Musicians Institute College of Contemporary Music, I tutored associate's and bachelors degree students in ear training of all levels. In one-on-one sessions, I taught students how to improve relative pitch by association. We used song examples as reference points to easily identify intervals, scale degrees, chords, etc. Bachelor degree students and I used the solfege system, while associates degree students and I used scale degrees to identify pitches.
General Music

General Music

As a guitarist with a B.A. in Guitar Performance, I studied many different areas of music to complete my degree. Between Musicians Institute's associates and bachelors degree programs, I took 3 years of ear training, 3 years of music theory, 3 quarters of keyboard proficiency, over a year of arranging, a year of music history courses, 2 conducting courses, prepped and performed 2 separate juries, and also learned to play bass guitar and ukulele. The program was designed to ensure instrumentalists with specific focuses had a very comprehensive musical education. I graduated school not only a better guitar player, but also a better musician.

I love to play in a wide variety of styles, and have a great deal of performance and recording experience through years of freelance gigs, various bands, and my work as a teaching assistant at Musicians Institute. I also have over 10 years of experience as a private lesson instructor, having worked for several music schools and taught independently as a freelance instructor.

Talented Teacher

Kevin has a full understanding of guitar. I am a fairly accomplished guitarist who has played for over fifty years and Kevin is helping me understand the theory behind the notes. Highly recommended.

Knowledgeable and Patient Instructor

In my initial lesson with him, Kevin was ready with a number of options on how we would proceed. Kevin made me feel at ease from the beginning. He gave me a number of tips that made my playing easier. His patience helped me get over the "jitters" and we had a great session. I'm looking forward to future sessions.

Terrific guitar jazz teacher!

Kevin is an excellent jazz guitar teacher - well-educated, thoughtful, and focused on a balance of technique, theory, and playing the music. He does a great job of walking me through reps on weeks when I don't practice enough to move forward. And he does a great job of keeping me challenged with new material and new ways of approaching tunes I'm adding to my repertoire. I've been working with him for several months now and am very pleased with the progress I'm seeing. Plus, I'm enjoying my practice more than ever before.

Great communicator and excellent tutor

My son is on the spectrum and has adhd and is incredibly picky when it comes to instructors. He liked Kevin right away which speaks volumes. Kevin was great at communicating beforehand, he was punctual and came prepared with sheet music which was an added bonus because my son is a visual learner.

Good lesson I’m starting to see improvement

Starting to see improvement. It’s really helpful to get feedback on the mechanics and had positions. Great lesson, thanks again.

Great ukulele instructor

Kevin's an inspiring ukulele instructor for my son (age 9) (of course he does guitar too, but we're starting out with ukulele). He is knowledgeable, patient and fun to learn from.

Great teacher very patient

Great teacher offered a Lot of good solutions and material to help refine skills. He was able to help me improve my technique a little bit better and show me ways to get more consistent in my chord transitions.
