Hello! I'm Chris. I’m an Applied Math major at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). Over the past 2+ years now, I’ve tutored hundreds of students in all levels of math ranging from arithmetic to calculus. I’ve worked with students both one-on-one and in groups, and both in-person and online.

Math has always been my strong suit. In high school, I took AP Calculus my freshman year and achieved a 5 on the AP exam. In my junior and senior years, I took math classes at a community college (dual enrollment) because I ran out of math at my high school. Before beginning Caltech, I took the SAT Subject Test in Math Level 2 and scored a perfect 800.

As a tutor, I make math simple for my students. Math classes can feel so complicated because they build on top of themselves. For example, the most common reason why students struggle in Calculus 1 is that they don't know algebra. As a tutor, I make sure students have a solid math foundation so they're prepared for new math.

Another common reason why math can seem hard is the language. There are so many confusing words and symbols. Many of us have had that experience in class where we look at the board and everything just looks like a sea of symbols. That's the language of math, and a crucial part of my job is teaching it to students. Students excel at math when they're fluent in its language.

Motivation is a struggle for many people as well because a lot of math seems unnecessary and pointless (hence the famous question, "When am I going to use this when I grow up?"). The truth is, though, nearly everything in high school math and typical college math can be used in real life very simply. I aim to show this to my students. It makes math feel real.

I am excited to work with new students. If you're interested, please contact me and I'll get back to you quickly!

Do you need help preparing for the AP Calculus Exam? If so, I’ve got good news: the AP Exam just might be the most “tutorable” thing in math. There is more information available about this test than probably any other math test in America. Tutors know this test like the back of their hand (or at least, good tutors do). As for my experience with the AP Exam, I took AP Calculus AB in my first year of high school and achieved a 5. I have studied official free-response questions (FRQs) from past exams, including sample responses (i.e. students' actual work from those past exams) and scoring minutiae. I also know what topics are officially in AP Calculus AB and BC (i.e. what is fair game on the AP exam). This matters because there are a handful of topics that typically exist in college calculus but don't exist in the AP version. There is literally a 0% chance that these topics will appear on the AP Exam. However, many teachers will choose to cover some of these topics in class anyway. (This is more of a problem in BC than in AB.) The CollegeBoard has published a lengthy course and exam "description" (256 pages) which contains an outline of all of the official topics. I'm happy to discuss that with you if you’d like. If you're interested in working with me as you prep for the AP exam, please send me a message and I'll get back to you speedily! Thanks. ————— In addition to AP Calculus AB and BC, I also tutor college Calculus 1 and college Calculus 2.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

An injury in sports kept me at home for more than a week. My hardest class this year, AP Precalc, didn’t wait on me and when I came back I had missed an entire unit. This was especially troubling because of the classes fast moving pace which left me far behind everyone else. Luckily, Chris helped me get back to a comfortable spot in that class and even ahead of the curb. He teaches in a way that just makes sense and breaks down hard concepts into manageable chunks. Can’t express my thanks enough for all the help.

My son really enjoys working with Chris.

We really appreciate Chris' help. My son's teacher doesn't explain the steps very well (and her notes are even worse), so he had been struggling. Chris has helped my son understand the math and his grades are much improved.

knowledgeable and patient

Since my kid started with Chris, we see her grade improving and her confidence is coming back. She just took PSAT after Chris reviewing with her. We are so happy to hear that she felt comfortable with the test as her math foundation was not that good. We sure continue to have lessons with Chris.
