I am Hannah, a biochemistry PhD candidate at Stanford University. I love research and science, and I bring this passion and experience with me in my tutoring. I am Hannah, a biochemistry PhD candidate at Stanford University. I love research and science, and I bring this passion and experience with me in my tutoring. My current research project is to determine the function of tyrosine kinases in choanoflagellates, which are aquatic microbes closely related to animals. Before coming to Stanford, I earned my bachelors degree in biochemistry and molecular biology at UC Davis, where I conducted research in theoretical chemistry to predict the conformation and physical properties of carbohydrates. I also have prior experience as an EMT and worked for three years in several counties throughout northern California.
I recently worked as a teaching assistant for Stanford's microbiology course, BIO 111. As a TA I held regular office hours, set up meetings with students to go over challenging lectures, hosted exam review sessions, and collaborated with the rest of the meeting team to discuss strategies for lectures and identify challenging areas for students. While I was an undergraduate at UC Davis, I tutored both high school and college students in biology, chemistry, physics, statistics, pre-calculus, and algebra. I am experienced in both 1:1 and small group tutoring (2-5 students).
My philosophy when it comes to teaching is to make even difficult subject material understandable and enjoyable. I aim to help my students build a strong foundation in the subject as they gradually moving up to more complex concepts, while breaking complicated concepts down into smaller, more intuitive parts. My goal as a tutor is to boost student's confidence in their own abilities to learn, teach them to make the best use of their current abilities, and empower them to tackle new problems independently.

I also used Spanish as an EMT to communicate with patients. As someone who learned Spanish as a second language, I understand some of the challenges that come up when learning a new language and know effective ways to get some of the more difficult grammar cases, like preterite vs. imperfect and indicative vs. subjunctive.
