I am Hannah, a biochemistry PhD candidate at Stanford University. I love research and science, and I bring this passion and experience with me in my tutoring. My current research project is to determine the function of tyrosine kinases in choanoflagellates, which are aquatic microbes closely related to animals. Before coming to Stanford, I earned my bachelors degree in biochemistry and molecular biology at UC Davis, where I conducted research in theoretical chemistry to predict the conformation and physical properties of carbohydrates. I also have prior experience as an EMT and worked for three years in several counties throughout northern California.
For three years while I was at UC Davis, I tutored both high school and undergraduate college students in science and mathematics, including biology, chemistry, physics, statistics, pre-calculus, and algebra. I am experienced in both 1:1 and small group tutoring (2-5 students), and my philosophy when it comes to teaching is to make the subject material understandable and enjoyable. I realize that any new subject, especially in science and math, can be challenging. My approach to tutoring is to develop a strong foundation in the subject before gradually moving up to more complex concepts, like a pyramid, and breaking complicated questions and concepts down into intuitive parts. In doing so I aim to make challenging subjects more straightforward and boost the student's confidence in their ability to learn. I also understand that retaining knowledge comes from regular independent practice, so I always leave my students with some practice material or light reading before the next session.
Whether you are pursuing a future career in science and engineering or just want help understanding a math or science class, I am happy to help. I can be easily reached by phone or email, and usually respond to questions in under twelve hours. Feel free to ask me any questions or schedule a session with me!
