Bio

I love tutoring and enjoy working with students of all ages. I teach all subjects for students in elementary and middle school, and I teach humanities (English, writing, grammar, ESL, history, literature, etc.) for students of any age. Much of my experience has been helping students prepare for standardized tests like the ISEE/HSPT and the verbal portions of ACT/SAT.

My experience includes working with students with learning differences. I first taught at Landmark School, a school in Massachusetts for students with language-based learning differences. Landmark was a wonderful place to begin learning the craft of teaching; its educational philosophy stresses the importance of both honoring a student’s unique learning style and modifying curriculum to meet particular needs. Because of my experience at Landmark, I am able to specialize in teaching phonics, reading comprehension and writing.

My undergraduate education at St. John’s College also prepared me well for a career in teaching. Its Great Books Program asks students to read many of the great works of literature, philosophy, science and math that have influenced Western culture. This curriculum is an excellent foundation for a career in teaching because it not only introduces students to a broad range of subjects, but it teaches how to approach any text—no matter the difficulty—in order to gain insight and understanding from it.

I truly delight in tutoring and in the one-on-one camaraderie that is built through the tutor-student relationship. It is a privilege to help students work through areas of frustration and watch how their confidence and initiative can grow through academic support. Most of all, I enjoy helping students cultivate the curiosity and wonder that is part of the learning process. Having recently graduated with PhD, I know how challenging school can be, but I also know its rewards; I look forward to sharing such rewards with my students.

Bible Studies

Bible Studies

I have an MDiv from Fuller Theological Seminary. My MDiv involved many years of Bible study (exegesis, hermeneutics, etc.), including 12 units of ancient Greek and 8 units of ancient Hebrew. I have also taught the Bible in both church and academic settings.
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

Since I began teaching over 15 years ago, I have worked with many elementary students. Mostly recently, I homeschooled a 5th grader in both English and math, although we also did some social studies and science together. Over the years, I have amassed many materials that have helped me work with elementary students, especially materials for math, reading and writing. I have also taught lower-level ISEE and so know some of the expectations that private school have for entering students. Most importantly, I have loved working my elementary students!
Homeschool

Homeschool

I have worked as a homeschool tutor on two different occasions. Once, I worked as an American Studies teacher on the set of Disney Studios for a 9th grade student. I also worked as a math and English teacher for a 5th grader, who was being homeschooled. I loved creating curriculum that both challenged these students but also met their particular interests and learning styles.
ISEE

ISEE

I have taught the ISEE for close to 15 years. I have lots of materials created that help students practice decimals, percentages, basic geometry problems, which are tested on the ISEE. My ability to teach SAT/ACT verbal qualifies me to teach the verbal portions of the ISEE. I also have coached students in writing the essay.
Phonics

Phonics

I first learned how to teach phonics when I was a teacher at the Landmark School in Massachusetts. Landmark is a school for students with language-based learning differences. Over the years, I have developed many materials to help students with decoding and language acquisition. I have word games, word cards, word wheels, etc., to help students identify letter patterns (blends, digraphs, diphthongs, etc), and I try to make this learning fun.
Religion

Religion

I have a master's degree in Divinity (M.Div.), and I am currently in a Ph.D. program in Spirituality at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, Ca. I have especially studied Christianity and Sufism.
Study Skills

Study Skills

Over the years, I have worked with many students in the area of study skills. In fact, a large part of any tutoring involves providing structure and accountability to students so that they develop good study skills. I also have, however, different materials that help students focus on study skills in particular. These materials range from assessments of students' learning styles to worksheets that help students with memorization. Teaching study skills often involves making the process of studying concrete and gearing this process to a student's particular learning style.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor.

Aline has been working with my son for the last year. He is 13 and in 8th grade so that can be challenging in itself. She is very good at keeping him interested and focused. She is extremely patient, helps him to organize his school work. We really like her and hope she continues to work with us.
