About Tyler

Hello! I'm an experienced guitar teacher and performer and have studied a variety of musical styles for over ten years. I have over five years of professional teaching experience and am very patient with my students, inspiring and guiding them to becoming a musician.

I attended the University of Redlands to study music at their prestigious conservatory. I studied both Jazz and Classical music with a focus on Jazz guitar performance, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Music. I also discovered a passion for teaching at Redlands after taking classes on the art of teaching music and after volunteering my time at different schools and musical summer camps.

I also took a Recording Arts class at the University of Redlands and soon after interned for studio engineer Jeff Peters at The Pie Studios in Pasadena. It was a very inspiring internship that motivated me to study Recording Arts and produce my own projects.

After graduating the University of Redlands, I was hired as the Music and Recording Arts Teacher at Fusion Academy, Warner Center. I taught Middle through High School students two levels of Recording Arts classes, as well as different levels of Drums, Bass, Guitar, Piano, Voice, Ukulele, and Music Theory classes. I also wrote my own Pro Tools and Recording Arts lessons and tests based off of authorized music production courses. I recently finished my Avid Training and I'm now a certified Pro Tools User.

Here are some lesson details...

~Guitar~

Learn how to play acoustic or electric guitar. Have a collection of educational books and sheet music. Here are some of my favorite books I've used over the years:

"The Sprague Technique" Peter Sprague
"A Modern Guitar Method" William Leavitt
"Hal Leonard Reading Studies" William Leavitt
"Jazz Guitar" Jeff Schroedl
"The Real Book I & II"

I have binders full of music and guitar tablature as well as instructional videos to share.

~Recording Arts~

Have fun engineering your own Pro Tools session! Record your own songs while learning recording and mixing techniques. I have over twenty pages of my own Recording Arts Curriculum I used everyday at Fusion Academy covering subjects such as microphone types, stereo miking techniques, microphone impedance, microphone frequency response, and other subject matter relating to analog to digital conversion and how to properly engineer a Pro Tools session. Curriculum material includes lessons on:

Parameters of Pro Tools
Microphone Types
Track Types
Microphone Frequency Response
Pro Tools File Types
Microphone Impedance
Optimizing Pro Tools system
Stereo Miking Techniques
Pro Tools Shortcuts
And More!

I also have several books and videos to supplement lessons such as:

"The Audio Expert" Ethan Winer
"The Art of Digital Audio Recording" Steve Savage
"Modern Recording Techniques" David Miles Huber
As well as the Avid Training Official Curriculum levels 100,110,200,210

My music studio has a smaller Pro Tools rig with a Saffire Pro 40 Interface with 8 mic pres, a customized Apple computer, and Pro Tools 11.

I have dynamic and condenser microphones including a AKG 1000s, Shure SM58, Sterling ST55, and a Audio Technica MB4k.

I also have plenty of Guitar amps to plugin into such as Custom 20 Watt Apache Head, Marshall 2061X Hand Wired 20 Watt Head, 2x12 Marshall Cab with G12H-30 Celestian speakers, 69' Fender Twin Reverb, and a Yamaha Solid State that sounds amazing with acoustic instruments.

Since I am obsessed with guitar I have several you can borrow such as a 1972 Gibson Acoustic, G&L Custom Strat, Cordoba Studio Negra, 1979 Ibanez Jazz Guitar, Gibson SG, and a Custom Fender Telecaster. Also have a Fender Squier Precision Bass if you get bored picking my six strings.

~Music Theory~

I teach music theory with a combination of my own curriculum material and Stefan Kostka's text book "Tonal Harmony: Introduction to Twentieth Century Music". This book is simple, straightforward, and contains well-chosen music examples to listen to and analyze. The accompanying work book has thoughtful exercises as well.

I have experience teaching Music Theory to middle and high school students preparing them for Music School as well as guitar students wanting to learn about Western Theory and how to apply it to their instrument.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Guitar

I have a Bachelor of Arts with a Major in Music from the University of Redlands, where I studied jazz and classical at their conservatory. I have years of experience teaching guitar and was the head of the music department for a year and a half at a private school in Woodlands Hills, teaching middle through high school students music theory, recording arts, music history, and several instruments. I have been playing and studying guitar for over ten years and enjoy teaching as much as playing.

Music Production

I have experience interning in a professional recording studio and teaching a recording arts class at a private school. I'm a Pro Tools Certified User. I have a portable in home studio with Pro Tools 11, customized apple computer, an Apollo interface, Pacifica and Great River pre-amps, and a collection of over six microphones. I have over twenty pages of my own Recording Arts Curriculum covering subjects such as microphone types, mic placement techniques, microphone frequency response, and other subject matter relating to engineering a Pro Tools session. I also have Avid Training Official Curriculum levels from 100 to 210 and accompanying books and videos for the student.

Music Theory

I tutored middle and high school students music theory for two years at an accredited private school and have tutored privately for over a year. I also took three levels of college level music theory for my degree. I have also studied jazz music theory for over five years and teach this subject to several high school students who are preparing for auditions for college.

Piano

I had taken private piano lessons for eight years. I can read music fluently and have experience teaching piano to students of mine. I also have taught music theory to high schoolers at a private school using the piano.
