It is important to know my student first. This helps to establish a good working relationship so it easier to learn why a student is having difficulty in the course and how to help correct things.

When a student comes for tutoring, I have found that there are corresponding difficulties with things such as time management skills, falling behind in assigned work, having genuine problems with comprehension and/or struggling with self-expression through writing. In that case, I follow the first rule of the Roman army which is to Divide and Conquer. We break the area down into pieces and methodically go through them and see how they relate to each other. When teaching or tutoring in history, the inquiry goes: (1) what happened? (2) Why did it happen? (3) Why does it matter?

Students appreciate the quiet, friendly and focused environment of a tutoring session, which I create. Most importantly, there are none of the classroom distractions. The tutor and student can focus on each other and the subject at hand. In this environment, my goal both as teacher and tutor is to see the student achieve a sufficient understanding of the content.

I hold very strong views on the need for good writing skills. Writing is an essential skill that can brand you before you even walk in the door. Simplicity, clarity and ordered expression are the coin of the realm.
It is vitally important to order your thoughts and know what point you wish to make. The guide for my students to “Write because you have something to say; not just to say something.”

I currently teach writing at California Lutheran University which I have done for about the last 12 years. I am a grader for the AP History exams that are administered by the College Board. I have been critically reading and writing for decades as both a teacher and a lawyer.

History

American History,

American History

I have been highly scored by Wyzant students as a 4.9 out of 5. I am College Board professional - trained to teach AP Histories and hired as a grader for AP history exams. I can show you how to master DBQs, LEQs - the scary stuff that makes you worry. I have also taught college level writing for 12+ years at a university in southern California. I'm easy to work with.
Government & Politics,

Government & Politics

I had a double major in government and history in undergraduate school and later earned a Juris Doctor. I was a law clerk at the Court of Appeals where the reading and writing of judicial opinions was the controlling aspect of appellate court work. I researched the law, read the record from the trial court and drafted opinions on a wide variety of cases. The skills that I learned from this association have stayed with me. I have stayed active and very informed on the subject of American domestic politics since college . Fore a number of years, I worked in Washington, DC. Following an interview at the White House, I was offered and accepted a job as a lawyer in the defense department. I was a lawyer for many years, becoming a partner in a litigation firm with about 50 lawyers. When I began teaching, my courses included world history, American history, government and economics, at both the college prep and AP levels. I also made writing a component of each course due to the importance of literacy and the need for fluency that can be found in clear, concise and ordered expression. The standard line of inquiry in my social science classes is (1) what happened (2) why did it happen and (3) why is it important? My standard admonition for writing assignments is “Write because you have something to say; not just to say something.” This helps insure that the writing remains focused and pointed.
