From a student point of view, I am committed to student success. I can make complicated things easy to understand. I am very familiar with the difficulties that AP students face. Usually, they work hard and still don’t get the sense of direction and clarity that they seek. I use a variety of means for them to get solid traction in their studies . I utilize drills, worksheets and written exercises for each Unit of the course.
From an educator point of view, content comprehension is not enough. Often there are problems with scope, critical reading, information recall, putting thoughts into words, writing skills among others. It’s a familiar list that we fix.
As an AP history grader, I have assessed hundreds of SAQs, DBQs, and LEQs and I can quickly spot weak writing. I train my students to write to the AP rubrics by using writing exercises. I also review past AP exam questions and top answers. Students study these answers and figure out why these essays received the top score. The exercise involves interactive discussion, analysis and more writing.

In particular, we develop skill sets (1) to remember facts, (2) to read, think and write critically, (3) to reason historically and (4) most importantly, students lean how to base AP essays on the College Board rubrics and earn high scores ( 60% of the overall AP test grade is based on writing). I have graded AP history exams for several years now - SAQs, DBQs and LEQs - hundreds of them. I will show students the path to good writing. We also review past AP exam questions and the top scoring essays as part of the training and development. Students also learn smart ways to answer MCQs. I have led field trips to great places and I have created interesting individual projects e.g. campaign books for students to follow campaigns, check the fundraising reports with the Federal Election Commission, candidates' websites and polling. We have speakers in class from local news stations to talk about what makes something newsworthy.

Writing

Good writing is an acquired skill that gets better with practice. I focus on training students to write excellent essays for both (1) certain AP courses & exam questions (history and government) and (2) academic writing which is essentially in class academic writing. Throughout, the focus is on developing the skills to produce an excellent written product, whether it is for an in-class 5 paragraph expository essay or the AP essay exam questions. The focus usually includes essay structure, thesis writing and paragraph development which are areas where most students struggle. I am an adjunct professor at California Lutheran University . I have taught writing for over 10 years at the college level. I have taught and tutored AP history students for 10+ years how to effectively write superior essays. I grade the AP history exams for the College Board. I am a retired lawyer with solid writing skills. I know and stress the importance of careful reading and clear writing. I earned the 2nd highest essay writing score on the state bar examination. Working with me is easy. It would be a pleasure to work with you.
