CBEST

CBEST

I received my B.A. degree many years ago. Recently, thinking I might apply to be a substitute teacher, I took the CBEST exam. Many of the people taking the test that day were experienced teachers who had failed the test previously, some more than once. I took it and got a very high score the first time! I never did apply to be a substitute teacher, but I am certain I can help any current or prospective teacher prepare for this test.
Clarinet

Clarinet

I played clarinet in school, from grades 3 to 12, playing in both concert band and marching band as well as in pit orchestras for school musicals. For most of that time I was the first chair clarinet in the concert band, and performed in both solos and ensembles at regional and state band competitions in Illinois. I play now for my own enjoyment.
English

English

I have familiarity with all major works of American and English literature, including poetry and drama.
Film

Film

I have been a student of film for over thirty years. Although I have some experience in film production, my expertise is in film history. I was active in my university film society when we brought numerous world-famous film directors to speak and visit with students. I worked for fifteen years at a major Hollywood film studio and would consider myself highly qualified to tutor any student of film history, theory and/or appreciation.
Literature

Literature

Literature specialties: Shakespeare, Romantic Poetry, Victorian Novel, American Realism/Naturalism
Microsoft Outlook

Microsoft Outlook

I have used Microsoft Outlook in my work on a daily basis for over ten years. I am very familiar with how to best utilize this valuable communications tool. As a patient tutor, I can help you overcome any difficulties in learning this important job qualification.
Music History

Music History

I have been a student of music since childhood. I have played both piano and clarinet, and am well versed in music history from classical to jazz. I have a wide range of musical interests and would be fully qualified to tutor music history or appreciation.
Poker

Poker

I have been playing poker for over thirty years, including in a regular "home game" that has been in existence for five decades. I have won tournaments in Las Vegas and am very familar with the theory and practice of all popular poker games, including Texas Hold 'Em. I also have a collection of poker books.
Theater

Theater

I have been a lifelong student of the theatre, from the time as a child that I was taken to see productions in Chicago. I acted in high school and college, and have never outgrown my early love of seeing live performance. In college I studied English, and have read most of the dramatic literature of the English, American and French theatre. There is no way to learn about theatre better than reading plays aloud, so I would definitely incorporate that technique into my tutoring.

Excellent Tutor

I would highly recommend Jack to anyone looking for a tutor. He is patient and enjoyable to work with. The hour flies by very quickly with him because he is so engaging!

Tutor responded:

Thanks, Jason: Your enthusiasm to learn really helps! I appreciate the kind words.

Very Committed

We are expecting a lot of Jack in terms of him accepting responsibility for our boys grades, period. To date he has met this tough expectation re: his commitment level, and in addition to the instructional requirements is coaching our boys on big-picture skills and the 'why' behind it all. My 13 year-old can be withholding, but he seems to be candid with Jack. Jack has exceeded our expectations on availability and flexibility as well, and always responds to calls and emails very timely.

Chris, 44 lessons with Jack
Tutor responded:

Thank you, Chris. I appreciate your faith in me and am working hard to live up to your expectations.
