Hello! My name is Steffanie and I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in physics. I am one of two recipients in my undergraduate class who was awarded a full, private scholarship at my university due to maintaining academic excellence. My philosophy of education is centered around ensuring that knowledge and academic success are accessible to anyone who demands it. It is not the duty of the student to adapt to an educator’s teaching methods; rather, it is the duty of the educator to adjust their communication style to match the student’s needs and work with them on their level to enhance clarity and understanding. As a tutor, I foster a friendly, creative, and personalized atmosphere that encourages learning. In college, I tutored students individually and led small group study sessions for my peers in physics and mathematics courses. In high school, I tutored individual students ranging from 6th grade to 11th grade in a variety of K-12 subjects – including preparation for standardized tests, like the California Science Test, the Smarter Balanced Assessment, AP exams, and ACT/SAT exams. In high school, I was hired by a counselor to tutor their son on the SAT and helped raise their overall score over 400+ points (with the largest increase being on the math section).

These experiences amplified my adaptability as I realized every student learns differently. In order to successfully help my students reach their goals, I need to actively accommodate each of their personal learning styles. Education is not just adequate instruction, but insightful questioning, an attention to demeanor, and a constant attempt to understand how someone might be thinking or feeling. An instructor must be motivating, gentle, and able to instill confidence with support and feedback. I am not solely an instructive tutor, but an academic coach and mentor. I emphasize concepts, investigation, curiosity, and answering “why” and “how”. I am well versed in numerous digital technologies and tools and integrate them into material when appropriate.

ACT Math

ACT Math

I scored a 36 on the ACT math portion. I have exceptional skills in detecting which tricks and methods to use upon reading questions and how to effectively go through the problems speedily and accurately. I think many students taking this exam battle against time limits, which makes one prone to making errors and not performing at an optimum level. Test taking tips and tricks are incredibly useful (and do exist) for these sort of exams.
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I was the only student in 6th grade who was granted the opportunity to self-teach myself math due to my teacher and my principal believing the school's math curriculum was too slow for me. By the end of 6th grade, I finished 3 math textbooks' worth of material (6th grade math, Algebra 1, and Algebra 2). My degree in physics showcases a high level of competency in mathematics so I understand how important it is for students to have strong foundations in their early math courses in order to excel in future math courses. In HS, I tutored students in math courses like Algebra 1 and I know it is one of those courses that is a "make it or break it" type of class for many students. I am passionate about ensuring that students excel in those sort of courses because it really is the foundation for future success in future courses.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I was the only student in 6th grade who was granted the opportunity to self-teach myself math due to my teacher and my principal believing the school's math curriculum was too slow for me. By the end of 6th grade, I finished 3 math textbooks' worth of material (6th grade math, Algebra 1, and Algebra 2). My degree in physics showcases a high level of competency in mathematics and methods in Algebra 2 are deeply intertwined with future math courses such as calculus and linear algebra. I am passionate about ensuring that students excel in algebra courses because proficiency in Algebra 2 is part of the foundation for success in future math courses.
Calculus

Calculus

My degree in physics warranted being an expert in the realm of calculus. There was never a day in my undergrad experience where I wasn't using calculus in my math or physics courses. Calculus (namely vector calculus) became my favorite area of math because so many phenomena can be described using that mathematical branch. I value integrating physical meaning behind complex and often confusing calculus topics because those real-world meanings enhance understanding and showcase the depth at which calculus dominates the physical world--ultimately showing the natural beauty behind so many (seemingly) complex problems. I hope to make people as excited about calculus (or math in general) as I am because once you start enjoying it and seeing the realism behind it all, you will notice that calculus isn't truly as complicated as it seems when it's first introduced to you.
Chemistry

Chemistry

My love for science extends to all disciplines, including chemistry. Despite graduating with my degree in physics, I hold a dear love for (bio)chemistry because of the importance it plays in my hobbies. An understanding of basic and intermediate chemistry is essential for maintaining a proper aquarium, both freshwater and saltwater. It is necessary to understand how things lie photosynthetic active and usable radiation promotes coral growth and certain ranges of light spectrum can promote fluorescent protein growth (giving some coral a noteworthy "glowy" look under certain light). Understanding acid-base reactions are also at the forefront of maintaining not just a successful tank, but a thriving tank. The use of external media like carbon and phosphate guards warrant understanding of how nutrients are produced in a tank and how they can be removed (which puts emphasis on the nitrogen cycle). One needs to know about ionic and covalent compounding if they are dosing trace elements (such as calcium or magnesium) to promote strong growth. My hobbies led me to delve into chemistry as much as I could and I have been tutoring students in this subject intermittently since 10th grade. I have done exceptionally well in all of the chemistry classes I have taken and I am sure I can assist students with doing the same.
Physics

Physics

I graduated with a degree in physics because I love both the sciences and math. I love experiments, I love learning about cause-and effect, and I crave learning the "why" and "how" behind pretty much everything. I was part of several physics organizations and I am also a co-author of two peer-reviewed publications.
Precalculus

Precalculus

In high school, I was the only person recommended by my pre-calculus teacher to skip AP Calculus AB and go straight to AP Calculus BC due to excellent performance in his class. I consistently got 100% on homework, quizzes, and exams (there were 2 exams) and ultimately got an A+ in the course.
SAT Math

SAT Math

I scored an 800 on the SAT math portion and have exceptional skills in detecting which tricks and methods to use upon reading a question. I was hired by my high school counselor to tutor their son on the SAT because their math score was below the national average. After about a month of tutoring, they retook the exam and their overall score rose over 400 points, with most of the increase being on the math section.
Trigonometry

Trigonometry

In high school, I was the only person recommended by my pre-calculus/trigonometry teacher to skip AP Calculus AB and go straight to AP Calculus BC due to excellent performance in his class. I consistently got 100% on homework, quizzes, and exams and ultimately got an A+ in the course. There is incredible usage of trigonometry in calculus and physics and understanding real world science often rests in the foundations of trigonometry.

Very good online physics tutor, professional, takes comprehensive notes about every problem. I love that she takes time to relate to you and your situation, while also making sure we stay on track (not that easy with a personality like mine!)

Excellent - friendly, clear explanations

The night before her first trig-pre-calc test, my daughter Claire was very confused. After one session with Steffanie, she "got it" and aced her test. Steffanie is an excellent tutor who meets her students where they are.

Excellent Calculus BC Tutor

She was helpful in explaining the concepts, not just helping solve problems, and this is what I was looking for. Thank you!
