About Laura

As a trained Waldorf teacher, I specialize in helping young children with reading and math by addressing the whole child. Learning to read is a combination of skills, and we look at all the factors which might create stumbling blocks to success. In addition to phonics, I use developmental movement exercises and imaginative stories.

In addition to my experience working with reading and math, I have extensive experience in the technology field and can assist students in their computer proficiency or building simple websites. Last but not least, I am a professional editor as well, and can be of assistance in college writing. I'm also available to work with adults on desktop publishing, accounting software, and websites. I look forward to helping you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Desktop Publishing

I have helped authors use publishing tools such as InDesign to create their own published books. I have experience using InDesign. I also have experience creating files that are suitable for upload to printers such as Lightning Source, and CreateSpace. In addition, I can give comparisons of the benefits of various desktop publishing tools and companies.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been working as a teacher in k-6 schools in Sonoma County for the past 6 years. I am currently a reading specialist for 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders. In addition I have a Waldorf Teacher Certification, for k-12.

Elementary Math

I have a degree in Mathematics and a teaching certificate in Waldorf education, which includes teaching math for 1st to 8th grade. I have tutored 3, 4, and 5 grade students for the past 6 years privately and as a one-on-one remedial teacher in a charter school.

General Computer

I've worked in the computer industry since it's early days in 1966, first as a programmer for NASA, then as a programmer for leading companies such as Digital Equipment Corp and Sybase, all in their early days. I have an intuitive and technical grasp of any thing related to using computers, including programming and end-user concepts.

Literature

As part of being a reading instructor, I have authored reviews of children's literature on my website litkidz.com. Drawing on a vast body of children's literature, I am also able to discuss various genres of literature, and help with critical reviews.

Macintosh

I have worked as a computer scientist and programmer for over 30 years, since 1966. I was an instructor for adults in using computers, and established a computer training center for Sybase. I am one of the original computer programmers for NASA. Using a Macintosh is something I do every day.

Microsoft Word

With both a computer background and an editing background, my use of MS Word goes beyond the ordinary. I've assisted people with full-length books as well as PhD dissertations, to make the most of the features of MS Word, and I am able to use that experience to teach others.

Phonics

I am currently a remedial reading teacher, using phonics instruction for 1st through 4th grade students who are struggling with reading. I use an Orton-Gillingham based reading product called Reading Horizons, which teaches phonics step by step. I am also a Waldorf teacher, and can apply whole-word reading approaches with phonics based approaches, depending on the need of the child.

Proofreading

I have experience with editing non-fiction books, PhD dissertations, and Technical research papers. I additionally have more than 15 years of experience supporting authors from developmental editing to proofreading.

Public Speaking

I have been trained in public speaking at a non-profit educational foundation, where I spoke before groups as large as 1000 people. I was also a coach for other speakers in that foundation for over 15 years. Subsequently, I began teaching adults, using my public speaking skills. I have been a presenter at conferences, as an individual as well as panel member. My ability lies in helping someone gain the ability to be natural in front of groups, no matter what size.

QuickBooks

I have worked as an administrative assistant to a CEO for the past 10 years, using Quickbooks to manage his multiple businesses. In addition, I use Quicken for my home accounts. Because I have a 30-year background in computer science and programming, and have been a computer programming teacher, I have experience teaching many technical subjects, to both children and adults. I was teaching a technology enrichment program in the public schools for 5 years prior to this year, when I became a reading specialist.

Reading

I co-created an intensive reading support program at a local charter school. We established testing for students from 1st to 4th grade, then tailored our intervention. I have successfully helped non-readers to become fluent readers using phonics and movement.

Web Design

I have used several programs for designing websites, including DreamWeaver and WordPress. I have several running websites that I have designed. I am able to walk people through setting up their own websites.

Writing

As a writer and editor, I have helped others by ghost writing for them, and have also written my own books, both for adults and children. I am able to teach others to write clearly. My expertise lies in being a writing coach. I have multiple testimonials for my work.

Excellent Teacher!

Laura taught me so much in a little over an hour. We covered specific topics I needed help with - creating and organizing files and folders. She makes a point of explaining the principle of something, which helps one remember it. She's patient and keeps it simple.
