Whether working with children, teens, or adults, my favorite thing about tutoring is forming a supportive relationship and witnessing my students' learning and growth.
I worked as a classroom teacher in public education for 15 years, teaching a variety of subjects in the 5th through 8th grades, although my primary subject was English language arts. I have also taught college English courses, mentored new teachers, and delivered teacher professional development courses. Since leaving the classroom, I have worked as a tutor and an academic editor. I tutor students in creative writing, essay writing, accountability coaching, college applications, and homework help.
My educational background has prepared me well for my career as a teacher. I have a bachelor's degree in German and a master's degree in English. I also hold California teaching credentials in K–12 multiple subjects and English.
Most of my teaching has been in person, but I have also taught groups and individuals online. I have used a number of strategies and approaches throughout my career, depending on the context and the students' needs. Overall, though, I'd say that my style includes using a student-centered approach, engaging students' creativity and critical thinking, using hands-on and interactive lessons, and balancing structure with kindness and relationship building.
