I have been teaching reading, math, writing, spelling and study skills as a one to one teacher for over 30 years. I have a Masters Degree in Education, a Standard Teaching credential, and have earned a Reading Specialist Credential. My area of special interest is in intervention for students with severe reading problems who have not been successful with previous remediation programs.
I have also found over the years that students with reading needs often require intervention in math, writing, spelling and study skills and these are included in our sessions as needed. In addition, my goal for students is a good prognosis for success in their classrooms, including better grades.
Finally, a little about me. I enjoy swimming, hiking, reading, movies, and being with friends and family.
I take great pleasure in working with my students to master important skills in each of our lessons.
I also enjoy the smiles and good humor we share. It would be my honor to be selected to help your
child.
Thank you for your interest in my skills and experience. Please do not hesitate to contact me, even if you only have a question or two.

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

In my lessons I focus on teaching algebra (and math concepts that are fundamental to it) in a way that is step by step, at the student's best pace. We cover the concepts found in the standards (ie. equations, polynomials, systems of equations, etc). However, I also work to make sure they "master" algebra (not just learn enough for the next test) because they will need a basic understanding of how it works in the math classes they take in the future (i.e. Geometry and algebra 2 etc.).
Dyslexia

Dyslexia

I have been a credentialed one to one reading teacher for over 30 years. I hold a Master's Degree in reading instruction and I have earned a reading specialist credential (California State University,Long Beach) I am author of a remedial reading program for dyslexic readers.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

Elementary math seems easy for some kids and a bit of a struggle for others. It certainly is a very important subject as many career preparation paths depend upon successfully mastering the math classes thrown at the kids. I have found that when I carefully diagnose a student's math difficulties and take them through each step of new concepts, almost any student can master math at this level. It is important to praise success, to review, and to try to fill in the missing places while trying to keep up with school demands as quickly as possible.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

Prealgebra covers the basic concepts necessary to mastering algebra according to published state standards (i.e. negative and positive number operations, equations with one variable, etc.) However, I must also include math concepts not in their text, but still necessary for the student who has not mastered them because algebra will require these skills (i.e. fractions, factoring, even multiplying and dividing if that is necessary).
Reading

Reading

I have been a credentialed one to one reading teacher for over 30 years. I hold a Masters Degree in Reading Education and have earned a Reading Specialist credential. I am author of New Passages, a remedial reading program. Skills are taught after diagnosis of particular reading problems. Lessons are individualized to address such difficulties as lack of phonic knowledge, learning of non phonetic words, vocabulary, comprehension, fluent reading, and reading for study and for fun. Students are led to become independent readers to their grade level and beyond.
