Hello, I am Cathy. I am a retired educator and school principal who loves to interact with students, particularly those in middle and high school. Since I have retired, I have tutored students in all middle school subjects and English, Social Studies at the high school level. Education has been my lifelong career tract. I am interested in how people learn, and value the importance of strong, positive relationships between student and teacher. As a tutor, I find it advantageous to get to know my client first. Knowing one's interests, skill set, and yes, even a student's personality provides me the insight to begin the tutoring process and guarantee success.
More than anything, I feel what makes learning possible and even fun, is to create a positive atmosphere and provide feedback during each session regarding what is going well. I believe in building long-lasting relationships. For example, some of my students from my high school teaching days are still in touch with me. We no longer talk about school subjects as teacher and student, but have maintained a friendship. My greatest pleasure is seeing a student grow in capacity and skill. A tutor should make certain students are empowered to a high degree of ownership of their mastery.
Last and certainly not least, I have a great array of learning strategies and tools at my disposal. From graphic organizers to reading comprehension tools, I will offer the most expert and critical process to help achieve the learning desired. I have taught high school English at all grade levels. I am particularly helpful for those students who want to improve their writing skills.
