About Kathryn

Hi! My name is Katie. I hold a master's in education from USC, where I graduated with highest honors specializing in special and exceptional education. I have a JD from UCLA and a BA in English from USC, magna cum laude. I am a member of the California State Bar. For high school, I went to prep school in New England. I guess you can say I am nuts for learning and education, and I hope I can instill the same passion and skills in my clients. I have also helped students with disabilities navigate the educational system and receive the appropriate accommodations (that JD does come in handy). I have successfully tutored and advocated for students with special needs at every schooling level -- from pre-school to graduate school. In addition, to problems with education, I have worked with busy C-Level executives on executive function coaching and ADD/ADHD support as an area of expertise for many years.

I have tutored high school and elementary students for many years with great success. I tutored in English, writing, social studies and history. I have helped students go from failing grades to As and Bs through learning and appreciating books and the subject matter. My methodology is to get a student to have fun while learning and begin to hone a passion for the humanities. My job is to make learning both exciting and productive. I have taught test prep -- from SAT/ACT to LSAT for nine years. I have been both a volunteer and paid tutor. I have tutored the underserved immigrant populations in the skills to become a United States citizen and low-income high school students on getting into the college of their choice including, but not limited to, test prep, high school classwork, resume revision and counseling.

I am also an avid reader and writer, and I can help any student become a better writer for any subject. My lesson plans are informative and exciting, and I tailor them to individual student's needs. I have a passion for proofing, and I believe that everyone has a bookworm inside them. I excel at helping people become a better literary scholar and writer.

My goal is that you are 100% satisfied and that we are a good fit. I appreciate all your feedback and strive to be the best tutor, coach and advocate I can be. Please contact me with any questions or comments. As part of the cost of coaching and tutoring, I provide ongoing support and scaffolding so the student can succeed. My job is to make it so you don't need me and you can thrive.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have specifically worked with children with ADD/ADHD for over nine years. I have had several clients with ADD and ADHD and have not only helped them legally, but through their individualized learning plan. I have tutored and used unique methodology for ADD/ADHD students. I have had several clients struggling I'm school and now are at top universities and are successful in their career. During my time at USC undergraduate, UCLA Law School and now again at USC for my master's in education, I have tutored children and adults with ADD/ADHD and had very successful outcomes. As a lawyer with experience as a disability advocate, I also provide a unique perspective as to the student's legal rights and appropriate accommodations. I am a member of the California State Bar. For high school, I went to prep school in New England.

In addition to have a JD and current law license, I have a masters in teaching with specialization in exceptional student whether he or she be gifted or a student with disabilities.

Aspergers

Not only have I specifically tutored children with Aspergers, but a former boss and associate have Aspergers and I effectively worked with both. I am very familiar with Aspergers and the unique tutoring style that it requires. I tutored one student with Aspergers throughout his high school career, and he ended up attending a top university and has the skills and knowledge base to succeed there. I have also extensive experience in disability and the law and IEP programs. I have successfully navigated the educational path of children with Aspergers both legally and as a tutor.

Autism

I have worked with children with autism since me junior year in high school. I have both coached and tutored various children across the autism spectrum, and I have helped these students succeed in school through tutoring, coaching and unique study skills. Throughout my nine year tutoring career, I have tutored many children on the autism spectrum and have the requisite knowledge and skill to aid those with autism. I am also an expert in disability and the law.

In addition to have a JD and current law license, I have a masters in teaching with specialization in exceptional student whether he or she be gifted or a student with disabilities.

Bar Exam

I took the California State Bar Exam in 2008. I took the Bar Bri examination course. I passed the examination on the first try, and have since edited and tutored students on the essay portion of the bar examination (Day 1 and 3). Although the multi-state multiple choice is something I could help students on, as I have litigated successfully in various areas of the law for over five years. I find that most students need to properly structure their essays and practice case. I have tutored over five students fresh out of law school, usually on their second try and almost all have had successful outcomes with my essay and practice training.

Career Development

I have consulted with many students when making the transition from college to the workforce including working with students on resumes, interview skills and executive functioning and training. I have over 10 years of experience in resume building, the workforce and helping over 50 students get jobs after college. In addition, I have helped people make job transitions or move to higher level in the workforce.

By way of example, I recently helped several students I work with 1:1 with ADD/ADHD and other cognitive disabilities get jobs in their chosen fields through resume help, interview tips and counseling on various positions.

I am familiar with the job market and how to get not just a job, but a job where a student will thrive. I have counseled first year college students, law students and C-level executives and everyone in between.

College Counseling

I have counseled over twenty students throughout the college process from test prep, to picking out schools and applying for financial aid. I am currently serving as a college counselor to under-served communities. I have helped students get admission to top schools through compelling statements, great test scores and making applications stand out.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have actively tutored in all subject matter in K-6 over the course of 15 years, and I have had over one-hundred hours in specifically K-6 education. I love grammar, and I can help you learn all the rules in an easy and effective way.

I have litigated for over five years and am proficient in most general topics of law, including but not limited to, employment, medical, healthcare, real estate, general civil, disability, workers' compensation etc.

Public Speaking

As a trained litigator and debater, I have honed the craft of public speaking. I have taken several courses and helped on debate teams. I have also helped younger associates with the fear of public speaking before hearings and trials. I have worked extensively in the field of students with special needs. I am familiar with IDEA and individualized learning plans and I cater my lessons accordingly. I am sensitive to the needs of children with disabilities and wrote a law review article on children receiving appropriate accommodations in school. I have an expertise in disability in the law and have helped many children with various types of learning disabilities both succeed in school and succeed in their educational path. I have a JD from UCLA and a BA in English from USC, magna cum laude.

In addition to have a JD and current law license, I have a masters in teaching with specialization in exceptional student whether he or she be gifted or a student with disabilities.

Study Skills

I would consider myself an expert in study skills and believe that study skills is the foundation to success in any learning environment. I have effectively taught study skills throughout my tutoring career which spanned over nine years. I have taught students the fundamental skills to love learning, and I believe that learning to learn is more important than subject teaching itself. It is the foundation upon which excellence rests.

I have specifically taught study skills in conjunction with subject tutoring for over nine years. Whether a student hires me specifically for study skills or as a subject tutor, I try to home theirs study skills and learning techniques. I have tutored thousands of hours of study skills. Further, I currently volunteer as a study skills tutor for underseved youth. I have also taught study skills to ESL students. As a masters candidate in education, I have learned how to teach study skills both academically and practically in my field work. As an undergraduate at USC and my law school at UCLA, I worked as a student tutor to struggling students, mostly focusing on study skills and fundamental writing skills.

Writing

I have a BA in English Literature from USC and graduated magna cum laude. I also have a JD and have honed my writing craft through six years in the legal field. In addition, I am currently getting my masters in education at USC. I have simple techniques to make a student's writing stand out and be ripe with fresh ideas and incorporate the subject.
