Hi, I’m Ohr (pronounced like the word “ore”). I graduated from UCSB with a BSc in Physics, and I am currently a PhD candidate at UCLA in the Bioengineering department. Over my past 3 years in my PhD program, I have gotten teaching experience primarily as a TA and substitute lecturer.

I have TA’ed both undergraduate students, mostly juniors and seniors, and graduate students across the engineering department in classes such as Biomedical Optical Imaging, Introduction to Medical Imaging, and the Bioengineering Capstone project. These courses require strong foundational math (particularly calculus), physics, and chemistry skills, as well as a broad understanding of biology. I held study sections with varying focus -- from lesson review, to test prep, to one-on-one homework help. I also held office hours, where the focus was more about one-on-one help with understanding concepts, figuring out homework problems, and revising project writeups.

As a substitute lecturer I primarily gave graduate level lectures. This gave me a lot of experience with teaching from the perspective of a teacher, which has given me insight into what kind of things teachers and professors are looking for in their students when conducting a class.

The most important thing that I have found in teaching someone how to do well in math and physics is first gauge their foundations. I work with them to find where they are in terms of their level and problem-solving style. Then I will focus on making sure the student approaches problems from the right angle and with the right setup. Once a student understands why they do things, they typically find that problems that seemed obtuse could be logical and straightforward.

My background in Physics means I can tutor any high school or college physics courses, as well as any high school math courses. I can also tutor high school level Chemistry and Biology, and I can help with preparing for standardized tests or AP exams in all the above.

Calculus

Calculus

In my studies in Physics, a deep intuitive understanding of Calculus was critical in being successful in my classes. Additionally, I use fundamental Calculus concepts on a daily basis in my PhD. I also scored a 5 in AP Calculus in high school, so I have a good understanding of the specifics of the test itself.
Physics

Physics

My bachelor's program in Physics was rigorous, requiring a strong grasp on the problem-solving strategies underlying physics. In the program, we were also required to present our solutions to the class, with a focus on clarity of explanation and showing a clear thread to the solution. Currently my PhD primarily deals with optical engineering, which itself is based entirely on E&M and occasionally Quantum Mechanics.
