I have been a successful elementary school educator for 27 years. For my 23 years in the classroom, I taught almost all grades, but taught 4th and 5th grades for the majority of those years. My role the last 4 years of my career was as a Teacher on Special Assignment for my district. That role helped me learn in depth about early literacy-phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, etc. I was in charge of our reading intervention program for at risk students, which transitioned successfully to online only instruction during COVID.

I have experience in all subjects, but literacy: reading fluency, comprehension and writing are at the top of my qualifications list. I am well versed in the area of metacognition and will not just "help" the student through subject matter, but will give my students the skills to help themselves learn in all subjects.

As part of my role as TOSA, I helped administer the Acadience literacy assessments. These assessments start with all the early reading skills: phonemic awareness, phonics and sight words. In 2nd through 6th grades, the focus is on fluency, accuracy and retell. I analyzed all district data to determine next steps and identify students who were at risk and qualified for SIPPS, our district reading intervention program.

My concentration in college was linguistics and grammar. Learning English grammar truly helped me learn Spanish as a second language. I am more fluent in writing than speaking of the language, but it helped me teach English and Spanish reading to first graders at the beginning of my career. My knowledge of Spanish is very helpful in teaching English to second language learners.

As a retiree, I would love the opportunity to use all my experience to help as many students as possible not only gain confidence, but truly succeed in whatever area they need. I look forward to the opportunity to make a difference AND have fun!

Common Core

Common Core

Besides teaching almost all grades for 23 years, my last four years in education were spent as a Teacher on Special Assignment for my district. In that role, I helped develop writing assessments for all grade levels that were centered around common core strategies, and coached and assisted teachers in the implementation of common core adopted curriculum in reading and math.
Dyslexia

Dyslexia

Besides teaching most elementary grade levels for 23 years, my last four years of my 27 year career in education were spent in the role as Teacher on Special Assignment. During those years, I was in charge of our district's reading intervention program. We used a scientific, research based program that worked well for with students with dyslexia. I was also in charge of the progress monitoring data for all at risk readers in the district, and guided further steps to help identify students with reading disorders.
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I very successfully taught all subjects in the elementary classroom for 23 years, mostly in 4th and 5th grade. I have expertise in all curricular areas and was a successful motivator and had great rapport with my students. The last 4 years of my career were as a Teacher on Special Assignment where I was in charge of our district's reading intervention program.
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

I learned Spanish as a second language while attending college to be an elementary school teacher. I also hold a BCLAD degree in California which certifies me to teach second language learners. In addition grammar and linguistics were my concentration in college.
Grammar

Grammar

I have a multiple subject teaching credential with an emphasis in linguistics and grammar.
Phonics

Phonics

I have had training in SIPPS-Systematic Instruction in Phonics, Phonemic Awareness and Sight Words to advance early literacy skills. I am also trained in the Acadience assessment and data gathering program which helps evaluate a student's level of risk in becoming a reader and helps guide proper instruction to remediate those risks.
Reading

Reading

I have had extensive training in the areas of fluency and comprehension due to my position as Teacher on Special Assignment for my district. I also have gathered a variety of resources to help comprehension in ALL subject areas. Teaching students to be fluent and expressive writers is also one of my strengths since grammar and linguistics was my concentration in college.

Wonderful Tutor!

My child has had several sessions with Karen. She is wonderful -- very experienced and thorough with finding out the gaps in my child's reading skills and addressing them in a methodical way to make sure she is learning and progressing. Karen is also kind and approachable -- my child is shy and Karen draws her out and finds texts that appeal to her so that she is engaged in the tutoring sessions. Karen also provides detailed post session notes for me so I know what my child is working on and needs help with. I highly recommend Karen C!

Assesses accurately and meets the student where they are

Karen assessed my daughter’s reading and comprehension level at the first meeting. She then went over a passage my daughter needed to understand for school and engaged in a conversation over what was read. My daughter can see the application of what she read in their conversation and was able to better understand the passage.
