Davis where I received a B.S. in Zoology and graduated from their School of Veterinary Medicine. While working as a veterinarian, I contracted Lyme Disease and was unable to practice for several years. I'm Kim, and I have been tutoring math students since 2005. I'm blessed to have had two careers that I've been passionate about. My first was veterinary medicine. I attended U.C. Davis where I received a B.S. in Zoology and graduated from their School of Veterinary Medicine. While working as a veterinarian, I contracted Lyme Disease and was unable to practice for several years. My sister, a teacher, encouraged me to tutor math and I found that I was not only good at it, but loved it as well! I continued to tutor students part-time after returning to practice and retired from veterinary medicine in 2014 to tutor full-time. My graduate level math and science education from veterinary school along with my one-on-one tutoring experience has given me the proficiency to tutor elementary grade math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Algebra II, and Geometry.
My lessons focus on the topics and methods being taught in class and when needed I will use other approaches to problem solving to help students understand the material. Math is fun because there is often more than one way to work a problem and I work to find the best method for each student. And no matter what level of math, I work to strengthen foundation skills such as divisibility rules, fractions, and mental math. I teach ways to memorize formulas, but also explain they are easier to remember if you learn associations, such as the point slope formula with the slope formula and the distance formula with the Pythagorean theorem. I outline different techniques to establish good study skills for test taking. And I use my own enthusiasm for learning math to encourage my students to feel the same!
I am passionate about education and strongly believe a good education leads to opportunity and success in life. Math classes move quickly and require dedication for success.
