A college degree can open pathways that help people improve their lot in life. I chose a career as a teacher in higher education because I believe that when more people have these pathways opened to them, it leads to positive changes that make our world better. Being a competent and confident writer makes those pathways that much easier to follow. I think tutoring is the best way for students to develop skills the feel anxious about because it affords unique opportunities to work with an expert in a context free of the constrictions of grades and evaluations.
I have a Ph.D. in English from Michigan State University, and I am a full time faculty member in the Writing Center at a premiere online university. I regularly tutor and instruct students who are both native speakers and English language learners in writing for the arts and sciences, business, the healthcare field, IT, and education. I was an editor for an academic journal. I am an expert in multiple style guides including APA, MLA, and Chicago.
I have helped several fellow educators in a highly ranked teaching program make it through the frustrating writing portion of the Praxis Basic Skills exam. Even those who have failed the writing portion multiple times have passed with scores above the average on their next attempt.
