I am a cultural and medical anthropologist, and a senior professor. I teach anthropology and sociology at undergraduate and graduate levels. I have over 40 years of teaching experience. I teach research methodology, medical anthropology, applied anthropology, cultural anthropology and introduction to anthropology and sociology.

My research has focused on health and social sciences. My fieldwork has been conducted in coastal fishing communities, in war-affected villages in the northern districts, in poor urban communities in developing countries, and among estate workers in tea plantations in South Asia. My recent research has focused on kidney disease among agricultural workers. The objective of my research and writings is to analyze the wide-ranging factors and forces that control and affect people’s health, in the context of the prevailing social, political and cultural systems.

I have a PhD anthropology at the university of Connecticut, USA.

I believe that teaching is a process that involves creating positive pedagogical relationships with students. As a teacher in anthropology/sociology who endures establishing a good teacher–student relationship, I believe that trust between the teacher and the student is an essential element in teaching. The students will start learning critically with commitment when they believe in the teacher as a trustworthy person providing critical guidance. Teaching as a pedagogical process involves constant appraisal and learning through experience. Therefore, I encourage students to contact me and let me know in some detail what they want, and hope we will establish a productive teacher-student relationship and learn anthropology in a creative way.

Teaching involves showing alternative ways of looking at things using analytical tools (theories, and methods of teaching) available to the teacher in an innovative and novel way. In my teaching, I take examples from research based around developing countries, tribal societies and South Asian countries to better teach the students. I am qualified to teach courses such as Cultural Anthropology, Introduction to Anthropology, Applied Anthropology, Anthropological Theories, Research Methods in Anthropology, Health and Disease, Healthcare Systems in South Asia, Comparative Study of Healthcare Systems, Medical Sociology, Sociology of Politics in South Asia, Asian Medical Systems, Applied Medical Sociology, Field Research in Sociology, Culture, Health and Disease, Theories of Medical Sociology, Research Methods in Sociology, Qualitative and Quantitative Data Analysis, and Politics, Culture and Healthcare in South Asia. In addition I am qualified to teach courses in general sociology and cultural Sociology including Religion in South Asia, Sociology of Buddhism, for graduate and undergraduate students, which could be a strong addition to the Department’s curricula. I am in the process of developing a course on Applied Ethnography which could be another course that I would be able to teach. I believe that teaching is a process that involves creating positive pedagogical relationships with students. Being an anthropologist, I am quite confident and able to traverse through the student- centered path of teaching and learning process. As a teacher in anthropology who endures establishing a good teacher–student relationship, I believe that trust between the teacher and the student is an essential element in teaching.
