Teaching was my first love. I'd love to share that with you! I am a native American English speaker, also fluent in Latin American Spanish, with over 15 years of teaching English as a Second Language, Spanish, and GED preparation to teens and adults.
When tutoring, I balance a serious focus on learning with humor and personal touches, building on my students' interests and goals so that learning is effective, relevant and enjoyable. Students remark on my ability to break down complex topics to make them understandable. I know firsthand that learning new subjects, and new languages in particular, can be intimidating and uncomfortable. I address this directly by pacing lessons to meet my students where they are, encouraging them to stretch outside their comfort zone, but not pushing them so far they shut down. And if something doesn't make sense the first (or second or third) time, we can always go back and review! Maybe we need to approach it a different way. That's what we're here for!
I have experience teaching both group classes and one-on-one. I have received consistently strong performance reviews and was awarded an Adult Eddy for excellence in teaching. In addition, I trained and mentored staff in my years as a nonprofit program manager, and I enjoy incorporating workplace skills into my lessons for those students who are interested.
I hold an Adult Education credential from the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, which certifies me to teach English, Spanish, English as a Second Language, and Elementary and Secondary Basic Skills. I earned a BA Cum Laude in Spanish, with a minor in English, from Willamette University, where I was a member of Phi Sigma Iota, the international foreign language honor society. I later graduated from the University of Toronto's Ontario Institute of Studies in Education with an MA in Adult Education and Community Development.
I would love to help you reach your goal of becoming more fluent in English or Spanish or passing the GED. Together, we can do it!
