Hello! I’m Devan, an experienced tutor with a diverse background in science, medicine, and education. I graduated with my MD from Tulane School of Medicine and am currently a medical resident in California. I’ve helped many students prepare for Step 1 and Step 2, with a proven track record of helping them score 250+.

I specialize in tutoring science subjects such as organic chemistry, biology, and general math. I’m particularly skilled in preparing students for medical exams like Step 1 and Step 2, and I also offer tutoring in Spanish or as a second language for students wanting to improve their language skills.

I grew up in Chicago, attended a math and science school, and double-majored and double-minored at NYU in chemistry, environmental biology, theatre (Shakespeare), and environmental studies. Afterward, I worked as an EMT in Oakland and conducted microbiome research at NYU Langone and Stanford Medical School.

Beyond academics, I’ve taught in diverse settings, including working with children in detention centers in NYC, teaching math and science with a focus on hydroponics and aquaponics. I’ve also tutored underserved students outside San Francisco and taught in South America, helping students with math, science, and English in Spanish. These experiences have enhanced my ability to teach students from various backgrounds and adapt to their learning needs.

At Tulane, I tutored premedical students and guided them through challenging coursework. My tutoring approach focuses on clarity, patience, and helping students build a deep understanding of the material, while inspiring confidence and a love for learning.

If you’re looking for a tutor with a strong academic foundation and diverse teaching experience, I’d love to help you reach your academic goals. Whether you’re preparing for medical exams, need assistance with science, or want to improve your language skills, I’m here to support you every step of the way.

Personal Statements

Personal Statements

I completed all of the AP English courses in high school, including AP Literature and AP Composition, graduating at the top of my class. Throughout both high school and college, I won multiple awards for my essays and was published in the literary magazine Lagniappe two years ago. Several program directors have told me that my personal statement was the best they had ever read. My training in storytelling at NYU Tisch School of the Arts, along with my experience teaching literature to children in the Bronx—through detention centers and in Palo Alto—has given me a deep understanding of the gaps in literary education among U.S. students. I am passionate about helping students craft exceptional personal statements that allow them to stand out. During medical school, I have mentored students and am currently assisting applicants in writing personal statements for medical residency programs, including specialties such as cardiology and internal medicine.
USMLE

USMLE

Hi! I’m a physician (MD) and Family Medicine resident currently training in California. I earned my undergraduate at NYU and acquired my MD at Tulane and I’ve spent years mentoring pre-med and medical students—teaching is honestly one of my favorite parts of medicine. I tutor USMLE Step 2 and core clinical topics with a super practical goal: helping you think like the test. We’ll spend alot of time on how NBME-style questions are written, what clues actually matter, and how to avoid the classic distractors. In our sessions we usually mix: breaking down stems (what they’re really asking), building quick, reliable frameworks for common presentations, reviewing missed questions to find the pattern (timing, second-guessing, or a true content gap), and making a study plan that fits your actual schedule. My style is structured but low-stress, and I keep things moving without making it feel intense. If your feeling stuck on a topic, I’ll explain it a couple different ways until it clicks. If you’d like, bring a set of UWorld/NBME questions and we can work through them together step-by-step.

Highly recommend!!

Devan was so helpful with my med school personal statement- she went through it thoroughly and carefully, offering revisions and suggestions, and really helped orient it correctly for admissions committees. She prompted me to think deeply, and her oversight helped me develop more flow, direction, and overall theme consistency across the writing. Her knowledge of the whole application process and what admissions committees are looking for was crucial for understanding how to write the essay. I'd highly recommend Devan for any writing or medical school application needs. Thanks!

She's amazing, what more can I say?

Devan is an amazing tutor, and honestly doesn't charge enough. The amount of knowledge rolling around in that crazy head of hers is wild. I'm serious, if it's related to medicine, she knows it. I could go on and on, but screw all of that. The most important things you need to know about her is that she is extremely driven and passionate about medicine, and more importantly, about teaching other people about medicine. She's very patient too. If you don't understand the first go around, she'll take time to help you till it finally clicks.
