Melissa H.

Melissa is a credentialed teacher who has over 14 years of experience teaching, tutoring, and mentoring students of all ages. With a passion for teaching literacy and writing, she enjoys using a creative process to help make reading, writing, and math fun. Using picture books for younger students and novel studies for older students allows kids to gain a higher level of reading and writing competency in an engaging way. Hand on math lessons and projects can make learning and deepening understanding of math concepts more accessible for students.
Melissa has taken courses and workshops to develop her ability more effectively teach reading, writing, and math instruction. She believes in teaching the whole child in a caring and nurturing manner because when children feel comfortable and safe, they are more receptive to learning. Additionally, Melissa is interested in working with mindfulness strategies with children as she has seen the process that children make when they are grounded and centered if that is of interest to you.

I have training and have successfully implemented math talks and other hands on math activities with students.

I have spent many hours in workshops and training specifically for beginning readers and writers and have led reading circles, taught struggling readers to make several grade level improvements in one school year. Writing is also a passion of mine and I enjoy teaching writing through storytelling.

As a parent and former homeschool teacher, I understand the challenges of trying to accomplish everything. I would be happy to offer additional support for homeschoolers and can work around what exactly you are looking for.
