I have an Associate's Degree in Computer Science from Los Angeles Valley College, and I am currently working on my Bachelor's in Computer Science at California State University of Los Angeles. Before that, I was an automotive mechanic, eventually rising to a management position where I trained all our new mechanics from the ground up. They were often right out of high school and picking up a wrench for the first time. Previously, I was a music major in multiple leadership positions where it was my responsibility to coach newer musicians on a daily basis. When I can see my assistance helping someone overcome a tough spot in learning, I feel a great sense of purpose and joy.
If you're an artist, musician, photographer, journalist, or find yourself wishing math wasn't required for graduation, I might be able to help. I used to think that my academic options were limited to subjects that had minimal math requirements. I wasn't confident at all in pursuing anything in STEM. It turns out, I just needed a teacher that could explain how it affects the world around us. When I worked at LAVC in the cultural center with a lot of artistic & creative students, I found myself excited to share the big picture when they asked me what I was learning in my CS degree. They often expressed relief in hearing a technical concept explained in a language they understand.
My approach is to meet students where they're at. I will never judge you for not understanding something from a previous class. Math and Computer Science are subjects that build from the ground up. If you're missing building blocks from a foundational skill, I'll focus on patching those holes first. In observing my peers and through my own experience, sometimes getting those gaps covered is all we needed to make things click. I'll approach things from different angles until we find what works for you.
