I am originally from the Bay Area, but I decided to attend Boston University, resulting in the best four years of my educational experience. I graduated magna cum laude with a BFA in Graphic Design and a minor in Western Art History. During half of these four years, I was the Teacher’s Assistant for an introductory Design and New Media course in the school of communications. As a graphic design major, I was interested in simplifying a complex subject for students with a spectrum of learning abilities. I taught students who had never opened Photoshop, had never heard of Dreamweaver, or had only played around in Illustrator for fun. I assisted them during and outside of class, for those who needed extra help with assignments and projects. It was the rewarding teaching aspects of this job that lead me into tutoring younger students after I graduated.
After graduation I worked as a Tutor and Teacher’s Aide at a nonprofit that caters to underprivileged communities. I participated in after school programs for students in grades 3-11, mainly in math, reading, and writing. Additionally, I was part of a six-week accelerated after school geometry program for bilingual third graders. I helped teach familiar concepts such as 2D and 3D shapes, along with new concepts such as fractions, perimeter, and area. I routinely switched between teaching the entire class of 20 students, and working one-on-one with those who had questions during work sessions.
When I am working individually with a student, I always want to ensure that he or she understands the material enough to do it on their own, and participate confidently in class. This has been my goal in all of my teaching experiences, regardless of the student’s age or skill level. I am currently available Monday-Sunday from 12pm-7pm to meet with students at a local library or to travel to the student’s location within the Santa Clara area. Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns!
