Hey! My name is Chris, and I specialize in college admissions, high school and undergraduate math, advanced biology, and computer science. I have prior experience with deaf students and those with disabilities as well as students with unique or ambitious goals. I went to Stanford in 2012 and studied Human Biology and Computer Science as a pre-med. Since that time, I have garnered more than 10+ years of experience tutoring Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus, Statistics, Calculus, Chemistry, Biology, and Computer Science (Java, C++) for mostly private clients, specializing in the college admission process.

Prior to that, from 2010-2012, I worked for Brazosport College's Student Success Center as a peer math tutor, which gave me the opportunity to work with students of many different ages.

I pride myself on my ability to connect with students and teach things in the ways that they're most receptive. I care very much about helping people learn and reach what their best potential can be. To give you some background on myself, I was the first in my family to go to college, and I was valedictorian of my high school class. In 2011, I was a National Merit Scholar and in 2007, I was a TiP Duke Scholar recipient. At Stanford, I was an Inaugural Leland Scholar and a 2014 Stanford Startup Garage recipient. Those successes have helped me empathize and advocate for students who have wanted to follow their entrepreneurial and academic goals, start companies, get into dream schools, and find success outside of conventional paths.

I'm fluent in English, Spanish, and American Sign Language (ASL) with three years experience working directly with deaf students. In a separate capacity, I have also had experiences working with students with learning disabilities, autism, ADHD, special physical needs, or those resistant to traditional education. I always help tutor from the perspective of what a student's and their parents' long-term goals are and take a personal approach to each student's style of learning.

I have used Photoshop since CS2 in 2009 and completed intensive Stanford electives in graphic design, vector graphics, Illustrator, and bitmap image manipulation. My experience extends beyond classroom software skills. I served as Lead Designer for Health IQ before its later approximately $500 million exit, created web and promotional graphics for Stanford organizations and concert projects, and have worked in senior product and marketing roles where visual design directly affected branding, advertising, and A/B testing decisions. I can teach layers, masks, selections, retouching, compositing, color correction, typography, raster versus vector workflows, Illustrator integration, and efficient Creative Cloud practices. I also help students understand how these skills translate into portfolios and careers in graphic design, digital illustration, marketing, product design, music, film, and other creative industries.
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I began tutoring mathematics at Brazosport College in 2011 while completing college coursework in high school, and I know how important Algebra 1 is to everything that follows. I help students understand variables, equations, inequalities, graphing, slope, linear functions, systems, exponents, factoring, quadratics, and word problems. My approach is to find the exact point where the logic stopped making sense, including earlier gaps with fractions, negative numbers, or arithmetic, and rebuild from there. I emphasize guided practice, clear reasoning, and having students explain their steps so they learn how to approach unfamiliar problems independently. The goal is not just better homework performance, but a strong foundation for Algebra 2, Precalculus, science, and future quantitative courses.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 is where students begin working much more deeply with functions and mathematical structure. I help with polynomial, rational, exponential, and logarithmic functions, complex numbers, systems, sequences, factoring, transformations, graphing, and other course specific topics. Because Algebra 2 depends heavily on earlier skills, I also identify hidden Algebra 1 gaps that may be making newer material harder than it should be. I focus on recognizing problem types, choosing a strategy deliberately, organizing multistep work clearly, and connecting equations to graphs and real mathematical behavior. Students learn why a method works instead of memorizing isolated procedures, building the fluency and confidence needed for Precalculus, Calculus, and higher level science courses.
Biology

Biology

My Stanford studies included Human Biology, and I also gained experience with both wet and dry laboratory environments, including standard lab practices such as pipetting and working with experimental protocols. I help students understand cellular biology, genetics, DNA and gene expression, molecular biology, evolution, physiology, ecology, metabolism, and experimental reasoning. Biology becomes much easier when students understand how processes connect instead of treating the subject as a giant vocabulary list. I focus on cause and effect, diagrams, scientific data, and the logic behind biological systems. I can also help students organize content for exams, interpret lab based questions, review class materials, and develop more effective strategies for learning dense science material without relying entirely on memorization.

I provide educational support in bodybuilding fundamentals such as goal setting, exercise selection, training consistency, technique, recovery, and tracking progress. Lessons focus on developing safe, sustainable habits and understanding why a training approach is being used. I tailor general guidance to the learner’s experience and goals without presenting medical or clinical advice.

I help students learn C++ fundamentals including variables, data types, conditionals, loops, functions, arrays, classes, debugging, and problem decomposition. Lessons use small coding exercises and guided projects so students can connect syntax with problem-solving. I adapt instruction to beginners, school assignments, and introductory programming goals.
Calculus

Calculus

I began tutoring mathematics in 2011 and teach Calculus by connecting the procedures to the ideas they represent. I can help with limits, continuity, derivatives, related rates, optimization, curve analysis, integrals, the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, accumulation, area, volume, introductory differential equations, sequences, and series as appropriate to the course. I also look closely for Algebra or Precalculus gaps that may be causing difficulty with Calculus itself. Students learn to recognize patterns, select methods intentionally, organize solutions clearly, and check whether an answer makes sense. For exam preparation, we can identify recurring problem types and focus practice where it will have the most value. My goal is real mathematical understanding, not formula memorization.
Chemistry

Chemistry

I have experience helping high school students with Chemistry Honors coursework, mock finals, exam review, and concept reinforcement. My Stanford background also included chemistry exposure through the Leland Scholars program and broader Human Biology study. I can help with atomic structure, periodic trends, bonding, reactions, stoichiometry, gases, solutions, thermochemistry, kinetics, equilibrium, acids and bases, oxidation and reduction, and other assigned topics. I emphasize dimensional analysis, units, problem setup, and the connection between equations and the physical chemistry they represent. I am also happy to work directly from a student's teacher materials, textbook, homework, review guide, or practice exam so sessions stay closely aligned with the actual class and upcoming assessments.

Computer Programming

My background includes computing study at Stanford along with experience in web development, technology, product work, and digital systems. I teach programming as structured problem solving rather than a list of commands to memorize. Students can work on variables, conditionals, loops, functions, classes, objects, algorithms, data structures, debugging, code tracing, and program decomposition at the appropriate level. I encourage students to predict what code should do, test assumptions, and understand why an error occurred instead of simply copying a fix. I can reinforce coursework, guide students through projects and practice problems, and help beginners build confidence with the logic behind programming. The goal is to become increasingly capable of solving unfamiliar problems independently.

I help students learn CSS through selectors, the cascade, box model, typography, colors, spacing, Flexbox, Grid, responsive design, and layout debugging. I help students understand data-science workflows including Python basics, data cleaning, descriptive statistics, visualization, interpretation, and communicating findings. Differential Equations

Differential Equations

Differential Equations becomes much easier when students learn to recognize the structure of an equation before trying to solve it. I help students work through separable equations, first order linear equations, initial value problems, second order equations, characteristic equations, systems, Laplace transform methods, and mathematical modeling as appropriate to the course. My mathematics teaching emphasizes method selection, careful algebra, and understanding what the solution represents. When a problem goes wrong, we identify whether the issue came from classification, calculus, algebra, initial conditions, or interpretation. Students develop a repeatable workflow for approaching unfamiliar equations instead of memorizing a disconnected collection of solution recipes.
English

English

My Stanford coursework included intensive humanities, reading, and analytical writing, and I help students connect those skills across English assignments. We can work on reading comprehension, literary analysis, vocabulary, argumentation, thesis development, paragraph structure, evidence, grammar, revision, and written clarity. I especially enjoy helping students who have good ideas but struggle to organize them into a strong academic response. We break prompts into manageable steps, identify what the assignment is actually asking, develop a clear argument, and strengthen the explanation connecting evidence to the student's point. I do not complete graded work for students. I use guided practice, questions, and feedback to help them become clearer thinkers, stronger readers, and more independent writers.
GED

GED

I provide structured GED support across Mathematics, Reasoning Through Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies. Rather than trying to relearn everything at once, I help students identify the specific skills that need the most attention and build a focused preparation plan. We can work on arithmetic, algebra, quantitative reasoning, reading comprehension, grammar, written analysis, scientific reasoning, graphs, tables, data interpretation, and evidence based questions. I emphasize clear explanations, guided practice, and strategies for approaching unfamiliar problems so students understand why an answer works. My goal is to make preparation organized and manageable while building genuine academic confidence. I do not guarantee a particular score or passing result.
Government & Politics

Government & Politics

I teach Government and Politics from an academically neutral perspective focused on institutions, constitutional principles, political systems, civic processes, public policy, and evidence based reasoning. Students can work through federalism, separation of powers, checks and balances, Congress, the presidency, the judiciary, elections, political participation, political parties, civil liberties, civil rights, and constitutional interpretation. I also help students analyze primary sources, compare competing arguments, distinguish evidence from opinion, and organize strong written responses. My role is not to tell students what political conclusions to hold. It is to help them understand how the system works, evaluate claims carefully, and support their own academic analysis with accurate concepts and relevant evidence.
Grammar

Grammar

I teach grammar as a practical tool for clearer communication rather than a collection of rules to memorize. Students can work on sentence boundaries, clauses, phrases, subject verb agreement, pronouns, verb tense, modifiers, punctuation, parallel structure, word choice, and sentence variety. Whenever possible, I connect grammar instruction to the student's own writing so the rules become meaningful and immediately useful. Instead of simply correcting an error, I explain what is happening, why the revision is stronger, and how to recognize the same pattern later. This approach can support essays, school assignments, professional communication, standardized test preparation, and students learning English as an additional language. The goal is for students to become increasingly confident editors of their own work.

Java

My background includes computing study at Stanford, and I enjoy teaching Java because it gives students a strong foundation in programming logic and object oriented thinking. With beginners, I often use Karel style exercises similar to those used in introductory Stanford Computer Science to make methods, loops, conditionals, and decomposition easier to visualize. I can also help with variables, Boolean logic, classes, objects, arrays, ArrayLists, inheritance, recursion, code tracing, debugging, and AP Computer Science A topics. I have worked with students who entered programming with little or no prior experience, so I am comfortable slowing the process down and explaining each step clearly. My goal is genuine understanding and independent problem solving, not simply getting one assignment to run.
Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra

I teach Linear Algebra by connecting computational procedures with the geometric and structural ideas underneath them. Students can work on systems of linear equations, row reduction, matrices, determinants, vectors, span, linear independence, basis, dimension, linear transformations, eigenvalues, eigenvectors, orthogonality, projections, and other course specific topics. I emphasize recognizing what a problem is actually asking before choosing a method, because some questions are primarily computational while others require deeper conceptual reasoning. Clear notation and organized work are also central to my approach. The goal is for students to understand why a method applies and how the pieces of Linear Algebra fit together instead of memorizing matrix algorithms in isolation.
Literature

Literature

My Stanford coursework included intensive humanities and analytical writing, and I help students move beyond plot summary toward genuine literary analysis. We can work with characterization, theme, imagery, symbolism, tone, point of view, structure, conflict, historical context, and textual evidence. I teach students to ask what an author is doing, how specific language creates an effect, and why a detail matters to the larger meaning of the work. For essays, I help students develop an arguable thesis, select useful evidence, organize paragraphs, and explain the significance of quotations. Students remain responsible for their own interpretations and writing. My role is to help them notice more, ask stronger questions, and defend their ideas clearly with evidence from the text.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

Prealgebra is where many students develop the small gaps that later make Algebra much harder than it needs to be. I help students strengthen fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, proportions, negative numbers, order of operations, exponents, variables, expressions, introductory equations, coordinate graphs, number sense, and word problems. I focus on understanding why a process works, not simply memorizing steps. Students also practice estimating, checking whether an answer is reasonable, translating words into mathematical relationships, and explaining their reasoning. My teaching style is patient and adaptive, and if one explanation does not connect, I change the explanation. The goal is to enter Algebra 1 with solid skills, better confidence, and fewer unresolved gaps.
Precalculus

Precalculus

Precalculus is the bridge between advanced Algebra and the function based reasoning required in Calculus. I help students connect algebra, graphs, functions, and trigonometry instead of treating each chapter as an isolated topic. We can work on polynomial and rational functions, exponentials, logarithms, inverse functions, transformations, the unit circle, trigonometric graphs, identities, equations, sequences, conic sections, and other course material. I emphasize moving confidently between equations, graphs, tables, and verbal descriptions. When an Algebra 2 gap is creating difficulty, we address it directly rather than working around it. My goal is to help students succeed in the current course while building the mathematical fluency and conceptual foundation needed for Calculus.
Probability

Probability

I teach Probability by connecting intuition with the mathematics behind uncertainty. Students can work through sample spaces, counting principles, permutations, combinations, conditional probability, independence, expected value, random variables, distributions, and Bayes related reasoning as appropriate to the course. I emphasize careful reading because small differences in wording can completely change a probability setup. Students learn to define events clearly, determine whether order matters, recognize conditional information, and explain why a particular counting method or probability rule applies. I also encourage estimating what an answer should roughly look like before calculating. The goal is to replace formula guessing with structured reasoning that students can apply to unfamiliar probability problems.
Reading

Reading

Strong reading is not simply reading faster. It means identifying what matters, following an argument or narrative, making justified inferences, recognizing structure, and explaining what the text actually supports. I help students develop active reading strategies for main ideas, supporting details, vocabulary in context, inference, annotation, summarizing, evidence, comparing sources, and more demanding academic passages. I often ask students to pause and explain what they have just read in their own words, which makes comprehension gaps visible immediately. My Stanford humanities and analytical writing background also helps me connect reading directly with discussion and written response. The goal is stronger comprehension and greater independence when students encounter unfamiliar material.
Writing

Writing

My Stanford coursework included substantial analytical and writing intensive study, and I approach writing as a process of organizing thought rather than simply correcting grammar at the end. I can help students move from a prompt to a focused idea, thesis, outline, paragraph structure, evidence, analysis, transitions, revision, and final polish. I especially enjoy helping students who have strong ideas but struggle to organize them clearly. We identify what each paragraph needs to accomplish and build the argument logically. Students remain responsible for their own graded work; I do not write assignments for them. Instead, I ask questions, explain techniques, and provide feedback that helps students become more capable of planning, drafting, evaluating, and revising their own writing.
