Hi! I am a PhD student in physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara researching quantum phenomena. Knowing that I study a pretty esoteric field, I am extremely passionate about making STEM accessible, and demystifying subjects that have a tendency to be presented as daunting. I have over eight years of experience tutoring high school and college students in math and physics.

I earned my Bachelor’s degree in physics at Barnard College, the historically women’s college of Columbia University. There, I minored in German and filled my extra time with studio art classes. I was awarded the Henry A. Boorse Prize in Physics when I graduated. Then, in a research gap year before starting my PhD, I served as a Lab Instructor at Barnard leading physics labs for first-year students. From my own learning experiences, I love breaking down theoretical concepts so that they feel graspable. I’ve learned how to make the seemingly obscure ideas often found in math and physics feel more logical and applicable to real life. My teaching philosophy centers on the idea that effective teaching requires patience, and an understanding of each student’s unique needs.

Thanks to my liberal arts education, I also have strong writing skills across a wide range of contexts. I am experienced in writing application essays—successfully gaining admission to undergraduate and PhD programs—and have extensive experience in scientific writing necessary to communicate research. I am also a National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellow and have experience writing successful fellowship applications.

Outside of teaching and working on my research, I love SCUBA diving, aerial arts and dance, and traveling. I also enjoy participating in local outreach with high school students in the Santa Barbara/Ventura/Oxnard area.

I’ve been fortunate to study with many inspiring teachers and know how influential a great instructor can be. I’m excited to help others find success in achieving their goals.

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I understand how intimidating math can be, and I'm passionate about making studying these subjects accessible and empowering. As a result of my field of study, I have a strong base in all levels of math courses, which I often actually still find relevant in my work today. I have over eight years of experience tutoring high school and college students in math—both privately and as a hired tutor at my undergraduate college—and I haven't forgotten what it was like to once struggle with algebra. From my own learning experiences, I’ve learned how to make the seemingly obscure ideas often found in math and physics feel more logical and applicable to real life. I care a lot about making STEM accessible, and demystifying subjects that have a tendency to be presented as daunting.
Calculus

Calculus

I understand how intimidating math can be, and I'm passionate about making studying these subjects accessible and empowering. As a physics major, I was required to take and do well in Calculus up to level IV, the highest college level. I have over eight years of experience tutoring high school and college students in math, both privately and as a hired tutor at my undergraduate college. From my own learning experiences, I love breaking down theoretical concepts so that they feel graspable. I love physics, and nothing makes me happier than working with others to help them grasp and love (or at least not hate) learning it too.

Studying a scientific field in a liberal arts program provided me with the space and curriculum to also develop my writing skills. In undergrad, I took classes in sociology, women's studies, American studies, history, etc, and took 8 semesters of German language and literature, frequently writing essays in both English and German. Some of my favorite non-STEM classes in college included Contemporary German Prose Fiction, The Profits of Race, Culture of Food and Health in Japan, Women and Science, and Race Class & Politics in New York City. I scored in the 99th percentile on the SAT writing section, am an expert in writing application essays (successfully getting admitted to both undergraduate and graduate programs), and have a plethora of experience with scientific writing that is necessary for communicating research.
SAT Math

SAT Math

I am no stranger to how intimidating standardized testing is, but with tons of experience and my recent revisiting with the GRE, I am confident in my ability to help others feel prepared and empowered to ace these types of exams, too. Before getting to high-level physics and math classes, I obtained a strong base in high school math courses, which I maintain and still apply in my coursework today. I scored in the 98th percentile of the SAT Math section, and haven't forgotten what it was like to work on mastering the techniques and build the confidence to do well. I can't wait to share my knowledge and skills!

Knowledgeable, patient, and flexible schedule

Madeleine helped my son get through his Pre-Calculus at the college level. Math is not my son's strength and Madeleine was very patient walked him through the steps and was quite helpful. She's also very flexible with timing and schedule.

Great Tutor

Madeleine was very helpful and knowledgeable about Calc 2. She was on time, willing to stay a few extra minutes, and requested materials ahead of time to make sure she was prepared. Very professional. Highly recommend her!

Very knowledgeable and invested in my success

I fell several weeks behind in Calculus 2 and had an upcoming life or death midterm with only two weeks to prepare. Madeleine was very eager to help me catch up and seemed very invested in my success. She did a really great job breaking down U-Subs and Fractional Decompositions for me in a fraction of the time it would have taken me on my own and for that, I'm grateful.
