About Madeleine

Bio

For undergrad, I attended Barnard College, the historically women's college of Columbia University. I studied Physics and German, and filled my extra time with studio art classes. I was awarded the Henry A. Boorse Physics Prize in Physics, and am now a PhD student in physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara. I am passionate about STEM education, and worked for two years as a Barnard Peer-to-Peer tutor teaching students in Calculus in addition to tutoring privately.

I believe that anyone who's deemed themselves "not a Math Person" has the ability to do really well in all levels of math. From experience, I understand ways to help physics feel graspable, and to help students make seemingly obscure concepts logical and applicable to real life. My philosophy centers around the fact that that individuals have different learning styles, and that teaching effectively requires understanding each student's unique needs.

Thanks to my liberal arts education in college and in high school, I have excellent writing skills across a diversity of subjects and circumstances. In college, I took classes in sociology, literature, history, etc.; some of the courses I most enjoyed included Contemporary German Prose Fiction, Culture of Food and Health in Japan, and Race, Class, and Politics in New York City. In studying German, I frequently wrote essays in both English and German. I am also an expert in writing application essays (successfully gaining admission to undergraduate and PhD programs), and have a plethora of experience in scientific writing necessary for communicating research. Additionally, I am National Science Foundation (NSF) graduate fellow, and have experience being successful in writing fellowship applications.

I've been lucky to study with many inspiring teachers, and know how influential a great instructor can be; I'm excited to help others find success in achieving their goals, too. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions!

Approved Subjects

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I understand how intimidating math and physics can be, and I'm passionate about making studying these subjects accessible and empowering. As a physics major, I was required to take and do well in high-level math classes up to Linear Algebra and Calculus IV. Before getting to these classes, I obtained a strong base in high school level math courses, which I maintain and still apply in my work today. I haven't forgotten what it was like to once struggle with algebra, and I'm excited about helping others gain confidence in their math abilities!
Calculus

Calculus

I understand how intimidating math and physics can be, and I'm passionate about making studying these subjects accessible and empowering. As a physics major, I was required to take and do well in Calculus up to level IV, the highest college level. During my time in undergrad, I also worked as a Peer Tutor for two years, working on a weekly basis groups of 1-3 students.
English

English

In undergrad, I took classes in sociology, women's studies, American studies, history, etc, and took 8 semesters of German language and literature, frequently writing essays in both English and German. Some of my favorite non-STEM classes in college included Contemporary German Prose Fiction, The Profits of Race, Culture of Food and Health in Japan, Women and Science, and Race Class & Politics in New York City. I scored in the 99th percentile on the SAT writing section, am an expert in writing application essays (successfully getting admitted to both undergraduate and graduate programs), and have a plethora of experience with scientific writing necessary for communicating research.
Physics

Physics

I understand how intimidating math and physics can be, and I'm passionate about making studying these subjects accessible and empowering. As a physics PhD student, I have a strong base in all undergraduate physics coursework. In school, I worked for two years as a Calculus Peer Tutor meeting on a weekly basis with groups of 1-3 students, volunteered in the Physics Help Room, and approached my coursework with a collaborative attitude, always working on problem sets with my peers. I love physics so much, and nothing makes me happier than working with others to help them grasp and love (or at least not hate) learning it too.
Precalculus

In undergrad, I took classes in sociology, women's studies, American studies, history, etc, and took 8 semesters of German language and literature, frequently writing essays in both English and German. Some of my favorite non-STEM classes in college included Contemporary German Prose Fiction, The Profits of Race, Culture of Food and Health in Japan, Women and Science, and Race Class & Politics in New York City. SAT Math

SAT Math

I am no stranger to how intimidating standardized testing is, but with tons of experience and my recent revisiting with the GRE, I am confident in my ability to help others feel prepared and empowered to ace these types of exams, too. Before getting to high-level physics and math classes, I obtained a strong base in high school math courses, which I maintain and still apply in my coursework today. I scored in the 98th percentile of the SAT Math section, and haven't forgotten what it was like to work on mastering the techniques and build the confidence to do well. I can't wait to share my knowledge and skills!

Knowledgeable, patient, and flexible schedule

Madeleine helped my son get through his Pre-Calculus at the college level. Math is not my son's strength and Madeleine was very patient walked him through the steps and was quite helpful. She's also very flexible with timing and schedule.

Great Tutor

Madeleine was very helpful and knowledgeable about Calc 2. She was on time, willing to stay a few extra minutes, and requested materials ahead of time to make sure she was prepared. Very professional. Highly recommend her!

Very knowledgeable and invested in my success

I fell several weeks behind in Calculus 2 and had an upcoming life or death midterm with only two weeks to prepare. Madeleine was very eager to help me catch up and seemed very invested in my success. She did a really great job breaking down U-Subs and Fractional Decompositions for me in a fraction of the time it would have taken me on my own and for that, I'm grateful.
