I am an associate professor at UC Santa Barbara with a Ph.D. in political science from Harvard (2011), specializing in applied statistics, opinion surveys, and geographic research. I earned my bachelor's degree with honors at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2001) and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Before UCSB, I taught at Stanford from 2011 to 2019. My teaching spans more than 15 years, including undergraduate lectures, graduate seminars, and individual research advising. I have mentored high school research assistants and tutored elementary math. In 2025, I coached Washington Elementary School's fourth-grade math team to victory in the South County Math Super Bowl.
I offer tutoring in math, statistics, analytical writing, American government, and U.S. history. I've created and taught an honors Political Data Science course and published research on statistical methods and randomized experiments. I help students connect concepts to real questions and understand why a method works. I have also taught American politics, the history of American institutions, and public policy analysis. As the author of a Cambridge University Press book, I bring extensive experience developing arguments, evaluating sources, and turning complex material into clear prose.
I live—and teach—by the 4-H motto, "Learn by doing." My goal is to help students become confident, independent thinkers. We will identify each student's goals and the concepts or habits causing difficulty. In math, we will work through problems step by step, then have the student explain the reasoning and solve a related problem independently. In writing, we will develop a clear thesis, strong evidence, logical organization, and purposeful revision while preserving the student's voice. I welcome elementary through college students (excluding current UCSB students), with sessions tailored to their needs.
