Hi! I am Maya, a freshman electrical engineering major at Santa Barbara City College. I am a calculus tutor employed by my college, and I also do private math tutoring on the side. I am experienced in tutoring college calculus, high school math, and middle school math. I absolutely love math and I love giving my students the confidence to take on their math classes.

I completed high school in the bay area, and I ended up graduating a year early. Throughout my time in high school I consistently tutored neighborhood kids both online and in person. While I prefer in-person tutoring, I also have experience doing tutoring online. I have been tutoring from the age of 12, and I have always found that my young age (I am still a college freshman) helps me to connect with students in a way that is more relevant to how they are learning math in school.

My teaching methods include breaking things down to simple terms. I wasn't always confident in math, and I found that my lack of confidence in basic skills was what made math hard for me. Now, with the help of a few good professors, I absolutely adore math (I never thought I would say that). I believe that breaking hard concepts down to a level that is intuitive helps the complex problems become amazingly solvable. I believe there is a lot of value in looking at math holistically, like a story rather than just an abstract problem.

The TLDR here is that I was not always good at math, and I lacked confidence through much of grade school. When I started to love math, it was because of a few good teachers and tutors that helped me build confidence. I believe there is so much value in a good tutor, and I love to play that part in my students lives.
