With my unique background and education, I can work successfully with a wide variety of students who have a wide variety of "issues" with learning math. I understand where the problems are, and how best to get past them and onto a confident path to math success.
My undergraduate degree is in mathematics, and I have worked as a computer professional, as well as a math tutor. My doctoral degree is in psychology. I think this is a wonderful combination: I can relate to students, understand their frustrations and fears, and at the same time I deeply understand math and take great joy in communicating this to reluctant and struggling students, as well as to well-performing students who want to maximize their achievements.
I look forward to talking with parents about their concerns for their students. We CAN make a difference! Stan and I went over algebraic word problems and some graphing problems I was having issues with. What I like about Stan is that he is very straight forward and is very knowledgeable about Algebra. Plus I like his attitude about tutoring. Would recommend Stan to anyone who is wanting a quality no nonsense math tutor.
Stan helped our son prepare for his Algebra 1 final. He did a broad review and then focused on Anthony's weak areas. He was kind and patient and has a nice teaching way about him.
Stan is very intuitive and thoughtful. He knows how to identify a students problems and then knows how to guide his students to a solution.
Stan has been tutoring my daughter in algebra for several weeks. My daughter's understanding of algebra has improved as has her confidence and math grades. Stan has a great approach and developed a good rapport with my daughter. I highly recommend Stan if you are looking for an outstanding tutor. Thanks, Stan!
Stan is very patient and gets my daughter to talk. She is able to see where she understands or doesn't understand. Stan explains new concepts clearly in a way that my daughter can understand. He uses a small white board, which is also very helpful.
It is hard to make a connection between all these formulas and graphs, etc. with "how would you actually use this in the real world?" Without that magical connection, it is so much harder to grasp. Today Stan said, "Let me show you how we can make a graph so you can figure out how long it is going to take you to finish that essay you are working on for your other course." He walked me through a formula, we plotted it and all of a sudden, by virtue of being able to see an every day application in MY life, it made more sense. Bravo, Stan.
Our daughter has really been struggling with what will probably be one of the toughest classes she will ever take- a combo class in Algebra II/Physics. When things got desperate we decided to find a private tutor. Stan is really helping our daughter understand the material. He is good about trying different approaches to make sure she understands the material. He has a sense of humor and knows how to encourage cooperation and interest in the material.
We highly recommend Stan as a tutor. This recommendation comes from myself, my husband and our daughter!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a BA in mathematics from UCLA, where linear algebra (matrices, vector analysis, etc.) were part of the curriculum.
I have been tutoring math for several years, including matrices and vectors.
I know the subject matter of linear algebra.
As a doctoral student in clinical psychology, I was hired by the university to teach study skills, test taking skills, and time management to incoming freshmen students.
As part of this job, I was trained in and provided materials for each of these topics.
I often find, when working with my students, that an important component of the tutoring is attention to these skills in addition to the specific subject areas for which tutoring had been requested.
