Bio

I am a former K-8 teacher who is highly skilled in the teaching of all elementary-school subject matter. My tutoring is oriented around first discovering the place where the student's understanding is temporarily blocked, and then finding creative ways to break through that blockage so that the student truly understands the subject and his/her natural abilities are revealed and promoted. I have accomplished my objective as a tutor only when the student no longer needs me to succeed in the area that was formerly so challenging.

I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education, awarded with honors by the University of Rochester (Rochester, NY). My career path has included classroom teaching, corporate communications, and senior-level business administration. Now I am returning to the place where I began -- seeing the light in a child's eyes when true comprehension is achieved. My greatest pleasure is in providing pathways by which a student can break through a learning challenge and touch the place inside that makes learning not only fun and exciting, but enables success -- both in the classroom and in life.

Elementary (K-6th)

Having majored in elementary education while attending undergraduate school at the University of Rochester (Rochester, NY), I earned a Bachelor of Science (with honors) in Education. I subsequently taught elementary school in San Mateo, holding a provisional California teaching certificate that expired when I left teaching to work in professional communications. I am highly skilled in teaching techniques for all elementary-school subjects, and have extraordinary patience and creativity for teaching learners who may have special challenges. My strengths lie in the teaching of language arts and elementary mathematics, but I am qualified to teach all elementary-school subjects.
Handwriting

Handwriting

Handwriting is one of the subjects I have successfully taught as a classroom teacher in the elementary grades. I grew up at a time when properly-executed, fine handwriting was emphasized in the public schools, and I have subsequently demonstrated my ability to assist youngsters in developing their own handwriting skills, both print and cursive. I have a gift for diagnosing the physical challenges an individual child might have in learning proper handwriting, and then devising specialized techniques for addressing those challenges. I also provide worksheets that help children develop proper handwriting technique.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

As a tutor, my specialty is the upper-elementary grades, particularly math for grades 5-7, when pre-algebra and beginning algebra concepts are being introduced. In particular, I focus on developing children's deep understanding of what is being asked in each problem, so that they learn to think independently. My students and their parents report increased understanding and improved math grades. My greatest pleasure is when a student says, "Hey...this is fun!"
Proofreading

Proofreading

I was employed professionally for many years as a public-relations and corporate-communications professional. Copywriting, editing, and proofreading are all skills required for success in that profession, so I have a great deal of experience.
Reading

Reading

As a former elementary-school teacher, I am highly experienced in teaching all aspects of language arts, particularly reading.
Writing

Writing

I have an extensive, professional background in public relations and communications, and have provided those services to numerous business organizations, both for-profit and not-for-profit. My English-language skills are excellent, with perfect spelling, grammar, punctuation and syntax, as well as advanced skills and experience in editing and proofreading.

Best person for my daughter!

The first time my 4th grade daughter had 1 of her twice weekly math lessons with Sheila and enjoyed math, I knew Sheila was a winner. It has been 2 months, and we are still going strong. My daughter still looks forward to her Monday and Wednesday afternoons with Sheila! We are lucky to have connected with Sheila.

It is an honor and a pleasure to work with your daughter. I really enjoy watching her skills grow, and seeing her get excited about math. She now sees solving math problems as a challenging adventure!

Skillful In Proofreading!

Sheila is an excellent tutor! I am a foreign college student and I had a set of scholarship essays to proofread. She helped me identify my mistakes and taught me how to better place the words to be easier for the reader to understand. She also helped to catch my grammar and punctuation mistakes. Sheila was very knowledgeable, patient, and fun to work with. I am very satisfied with our lesson and I highly recommend her as a tutor!
