About Amy

My name is Amy and I am an English and Spanish tutor. I graduated from CSU Stanislaus in 2008 with a B.A. in Liberal Studies and a concentration in Spanish. During my education, I studied abroad in Alicante, Spain where I passed the D.E.L.E. exam. I was awarded the advanced language certificate by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science. While at CSU Stanislaus, I worked as an ESL tutor and helped students with writing issues, such as subject/verb agreement and syntax. I have also tutored K-6 children in math and reading.

I am currently enrolled at Concordia University where I am pursuing a Curriculum and Instruction graduate degree. As such, I am very familiar with writing academic papers. I pride myself in my writing abilities and can offer very thorough writing critiques and tutoring services. I am proficient in APA formatting.

In addition to specific subject tutoring, I also strive to help my students become better learners. I want them to recognize the importance of being precise and thorough in their work. These traits will help them in all of their academic endeavors.

In my professional experience I worked at a private high school where I taught Spanish II-IV Advanced Placement. During that same time I also taught after-school beginning Spanish classes to elementary school children. I am very skilled at adapting my curriculum to different age groups and individual learning styles.

I am currently working in the Stanford Graduate School of Education as an Academic Program Professional for the California World Language Project.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have experience as an ESL tutor from when I was an undergraduate student at CSU Stanislaus. I used to work one-on-one with with a diverse group of students on topics ranging from basic 5 paragraph essay writing to English speaking. I worked with my students' professors to diagnose their writing problems and to set goals for their success. Thanks to this experience, I am skilled at teaching many of the fundamentals of English grammar and writing.

Proofreading

I have extensive experience as a proofreader. I have proofread everything from short essays to master's theses. My focus is specifically on clarity, grammar, punctuation, and spelling issues. My rates for proofreading vary on a case-by-case basis. Please contact me if you are interested.

Spanish

I love the Spanish language. I have experience as both a high school Spanish teacher and as a Spanish tutor for students of all ages. I hold a prestigious advanced Spanish language certificate called the D.E.L.E. that I obtained while I lived abroad in Spain. I feel that I am adept at quickly diagnosing obstacles to second language learning, and I am able to develop structured lessons to make steady progress towards students' language learning goals. In particular, I am very familiar with the current high school curriculum, which is a great asset to help students who are struggling in their Spanish courses.
