Lawrence University (Political Science)
Thanks for browsing my profile! I believe that every student can succeed and, what's more, that any student can become a genius given enough time, resources, and motivation. I take a holistic and rigorous approach to teaching, focused on improving one's learning ability as well as their understanding of the subject matter.
I am currently a grad student studying Economics and Mathematics at SFSU, and in the meantime I tutor and teach. My current research interests surround applying network theory to political economy. I can assist with all levels of math up to multi-variable calculus and including statistics. I am also competent in reading, writing, and the research process. I graduated with a major in Political Science and a minor in German from Lawrence University. As an undergraduate I focused on politics, law, and international relations, and spent a semester in Germany studying the EU.
I am also a musician. I entered Lawrence as a Bass Performance major and played in jazz and wind ensembles, though eventually the social sciences won out. Before college I played bass in the various high school jazz bands, orchestras, ans wind ensembles. I also played percussion in the Woodside marching band and drums with the First Congregational Church, and have played guitar all my life. I teach all levels of bass, upright and electric, and beginning guitar and drums. I teach composition, reading, improvisation, and bow technique. Styles in include jazz (be-bop, big band, Latin), rock, funk, blues, and flamenco.
Feel free contact me and we can discuss whether we are a good fit!
-Justin Hi Everyone,

I charge extra for lessons outside of RWC, but offer discounts for group lessons. I'm happy to tutor at your house or any local establishment.
My son has always struggled with reading and writing - especially getting started. Justin managed to get our son interested and engaged with the material. Writing was no longer a hassle that caused him stress and his grades drastically improved! Furthermore, he seems to really care about his students, making them his top priority. We've had him for a while now and are constantly impressed by level of engagement and attention, always providing in-depth feedback for ways to help him ourselves. We're so grateful for his help and would recommend him to anyone!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been playing guitar since I was 12. I was a music major in college. I can teach many styles (blues, rock, funk, classical, flamenco), and can teach how to read music, play rhythm guitar, and solo. I play acoustic and electric.
I have tutored people of all ages in many different subjects for over 10 years. Since study skills often aren't taught in school they're left up to the students to learn. Having mastered and taught many basic skills including mnemonic devices, reading techniques, note-taking methods, and time management, I feel comfortable tutoring not just content, but study-techniques as well.
