Hi! My name is Alan, I'm a student at Columbia University studying mathematics and creative writing with a focus in poetry. I also have experience with fiction, screenwriting, and other disciplines. A National Student Poet semifinalist and Kenyon Review Young Writers Workshop Alumni, I'm extremely passionate about the art of writing. Through my workshop and seminar experience at Columbia, I've also become dedicated specificity, stakes, and efficiency—whether it be in my poetry, in essays, or in feedback. I will work with you to develop a writer's mind and eye; I aim to guide you to find your own critical eye and practice through detailed feedback, personal discussion, close reading exercises, and critique.
I'm also an experienced educator. Throughout high school, I taught elementary and middle schoolers creative writing through a more theory based approach, going through simply story structures like Freytag's Pyramid and the Hero's Journey. I have also worked in college consulting, independently working with students one-on-one to enrich and refine essays, ultimately helping students get offers from schools like Columbia and Emory.
I'm available to work with you on applications—college, writing camps(CSSSA, Kenyon, etc), creative writing—from workshopping to basic story structure, and formal writing—essay structure work, grammar, close reading, etc.
I am also available to tutor math all the way up to multivariable calculus. I only tutor online.
