Hi! My name is Alan, I'm a student at Columbia University studying mathematics and creative writing with a focus in poetry. I also have experience with fiction, screenwriting, and other disciplines. A National Student Poet semifinalist and Kenyon Review Young Writers Workshop Alumni, I'm extremely passionate about the art of writing. Through my workshop and seminar experience at Columbia, I've also become dedicated specificity, stakes, and efficiency—whether it be in my poetry, in essays, or in feedback. I will work with you to develop a writer's mind and eye; I aim to guide you to find your own critical eye and practice through detailed feedback, personal discussion, close reading exercises, and critique.

I'm also an experienced educator. Throughout high school, I taught elementary and middle schoolers creative writing through a more theory based approach, going through simply story structures like Freytag's Pyramid and the Hero's Journey. I have also worked in college consulting, independently working with students one-on-one to enrich and refine essays, ultimately helping students get offers from schools like Columbia and Emory.

I'm available to work with you on applications—college, writing camps(CSSSA, Kenyon, etc), creative writing—from workshopping to basic story structure, and formal writing—essay structure work, grammar, close reading, etc.
I am also available to tutor math all the way up to multivariable calculus. I only tutor online.

Creative Writing

Creative Writing

I've been nominated for positions such as National Student Poet and participated in programs such as Kenyon Review Young Writer's Workshop. I've also been published a few times. I've studied and worked with writers such as Anelise Chen, Negesti Kaudo, Chiwan Choi, and Michael Buckley.
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

I've helped high schoolers get into schools like Columbia and Emory. Additionally, I served as an editor for small literary magazines. Finally, I've been a teaching assistant for AP level high school English, helping students edit essays and close read.
Fiction Writing

Fiction Writing

Although I specialize in poetry, I avidly write and read fiction for study. I approach fiction through a micro lens, I'm interested in turns of phrase and shifts of character. I've had years of workshopping experience, and am familiar with general story structure theories: we'll learn to work in and break out of story structure, and we'll work to refine your writing rigorously.
