Hi! I'm Holden, a graduate student in Physics at SFSU and a former mathematics teacher at Oakwood School in Morgan Hill, where for two years I taught Calculus (AP AB and BC), AP and non-AP Statistics, Algebra II, and two advanced electives I introduced: Introduction to Proofs and Introduction to Analysis. Additionally, I hosted the after-school math support program for the entire middle and high school. Before teaching at Oakwood, I obtained my B.A. in Mathematics and Physics from Reed College, where I was a faculty-nominated peer tutor for the first and second year physics courses. I have extensive experience meeting each student where they are at in their ability, interest, confidence, and goals, across almost the entire conceivable range. My own love of learning is powered by a deep curiosity and eagerness to understand things in a way I find satisfying, and this is what I can help each student find and fuel within themselves.
I am extremely flexible in our tutoring sessions. I will begin by asking what you need help with, and what you're learning about in class. From there, after gauging your current understanding, I will help explain concepts in a way that makes sense, and help you practice using those concepts in problem-solving. I will also help you cover anything from previous classes that you need but maybe don't remember/never really understood. Above all, I will help you actually understand what's going on, solid as the ground beneath you. If you just want to cut corners and want a tutor to do all the work for you, I'm not the tutor for you. If you want to learn, master the ideas, and gain the confidence that comes with that, we'll work together well.
I'm genuinely excited about math and physics, and I love showing others just how interesting these subjects really are. Math is often taught as a set of arbitrary rules to memorize. At its heart, though, math is about making sense of ideas and seeing how they fit together. Math taught right is a rewarding exploration that actually clicks.
