Hi! I'm Michelle, and I'm here to help you succeed in your Biology class based on research-backed learning strategies and your goals and interests. I tutor high school, AP, and introductory college level Biology curricula, as well as advanced courses in Genetics, Neurobiology/Neuroscience, and Physiology.

I received my PhD in Biology from Stanford, where I used molecular/cellular biology and genetics techniques to research nervous system function in Drosophila (fruit flies). Before grad school, I earned a BA in Molecular/Cellular Biology from UC Berkeley and got my start in research there in a microbiology lab.

I bring over a decade of education experience from teaching university courses in genetics, neurobiology, and anatomy; tutoring biology and math at K-5 through college levels; and mentoring PhD students 1-on-1. My approach is grounded in evidence-based, student-centered strategies I've learned from university teaching centers and K-12 tutoring programs.

One thing I've learned from my time as a graduate student and instructor is that many classes are structured in ways that fail to set all students up for success. As a tutor, my goal is to provide customized support if you are experiencing barriers in your learning, or if you want to extend your learning beyond the constraints of a classroom through independent work.

I'd also be happy to share my academic experience in areas beyond coursework, such as exam prep (AP Biology, MCAT, GRE, etc.), graduate school admissions, or supplemental research mentorship for undergrad or graduate students looking for additional support outside of the lab. Please feel free to contact me about the kind of tutoring you are looking for to see if I'd be a good fit for your needs!

Biology

Biology

I completed my PhD in a highly interdisciplinary Biology department and had the opportunity to engage with seminars and courses across a wide variety of biosciences topics in addition to specializing in neuroscience as a researcher. I have experience teaching genetics, anatomy, and neurobiology courses, as well as familiarity with literature on evidence-based techniques for teaching in STEM. Before my PhD, I have extensive experience taking biology courses at all levels, including AP and introductory undergraduate courses, as well as upper-division courses in genetics, developmental biology, biochemistry, cell biology, neurobiology, anatomy/physiology, endocrinology, immunology, and microbiology.
Genetics

Genetics

As a PhD student at Stanford, I taught an introductory Genetics course which was equivalent to the Heredity and Gene Expression/Regulation units in the AP Biology curriculum, or to the genetics portion of the intro biology series at most colleges (e.g. Bio 1A/1B). I became familiar with common challenges students encounter when learning genetics through leading content review and problem-solving activities during discussion sections, as well as grading assignments and exams. Additionally, I did my dissertation research in a lab studying the fruit fly Drosophila as a genetic model organism and have extensive experience applying genetics concepts in a practical setting, as well as formulating and testing scientific questions about how genetic mechanisms drive neurobiological functions.
Neuroscience

Neuroscience

I completed my PhD in Biology in a neuroscience lab and did interdisciplinary research integrating concepts from molecular, cellular, systems, and computational neuroscience. I have experience teaching molecular and cellular neurobiology as a graduate instructor, as well as familiarity with literature on evidence-based techniques for teaching in STEM. Before my PhD, I earned a BA in Molecular and Cellular Biology with an emphasis in Neurobiology from UC Berkeley.
Physiology

Physiology

I completed my PhD in a highly interdisciplinary Biology department and had the opportunity to engage with seminars and courses across a wide variety of biosciences topics, including physiology. My PhD research focused on the physiology of the nervous system. Before my PhD, I also have experience taking several anatomy and physiology courses, both in high school and at the undergraduate level.

Helpful mentor

Michelle is a super helpful biology mentor. She's always readily available, easy to communicate with, and overall shows great care in her mentoring. She explains things well and makes each session productive. My daughter has learned a lot thanks to her guidance.
