Hello,

About the Japanese Language and Culture class:

My name is Keiko, I am a native speaker of Japanese. I started teaching Japanese back in 90’s, as a lecturer at Osaka University of Foreign Studies. I have studied linguistics and earned an M.A. degree, as well as passing the Japanese Language Teaching Competency Test.

After moving to California, I received a California Single Subject Credential in Japanese.
I continued teaching Japanese language and culture in various institutions - including the University of the Pacific, as well as Toshiba in San Francisco Bay Area.

For adult students, approximately 10 weeks of tutoring will give you the survival skills necessary to function in a Japanese environment. 20 weeks will allow you to socialize in any Japanese setting.
As a tutor, I am able to incorporate culturally relevant materials, while meeting each student’s learning needs. I always try to create a friendly, conversational class culture to encourage language skill development.

For the students who would like to pass JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test, administrated through Japan Foundation in the U.S.), I can provide effective preparation, step by step, according to each student’s individual level of proficiency.

About the Abacus Math class:

I am a qualified abacus math (soroban) teacher. Abacus is a required math program in many Asian countries, including Japan. Trained abacus users solve math problems mentally with tremendous speed. They employ visualization of the abacus beads in their head. I will be happy to coach this great skill to any child who is interested in. Typically children in Japan start abacus training at the age of five. Because of this, they usually exhibit higher math scores throughout all of the years of their schooling.

I teach all levels from beginning to advanced. For abacus training, I would accept students from 4 year old to 10 year old. I look forward to hearing from you soon!

Japanese and Abacus math

Keiko is the perfect tutor for my son who is learning Japanese and also loves math. Her offering an initial trial lesson free to make sure of a good fit was very helpful.

Excellent Tutor! Highly recommended

My son had nearly 50 lessons for the last seven months to prepare for the AP Japanese language and culture exam. Keiko is not only very friendly and patient but also she is a very knowledgeable and experienced teacher. She carefully assesses the student's level in detail and gives tailor made lesson to focus on the areas that needs to be strengthened. I noticed his Japanese improved much better than at the time we used to live in Japan. She is always ready to help the student and even gave him extra help outside the tutoring sessions. We were so lucky to have Keiko and she is the best Japanese teacher we have ever had!
