Bio

I am a UCLA graduate with a BA in economics, and I have 8 years of experience in math education on the following subjects: elementary math, pre-algebra, algebra I, algebra II, and pre-calculus. I work through online platforms with students whose needs range from tutoring just one hour a week to teaching them an entire math curriculum.

MY FOCUS AS YOUR TUTOR:

1. Mastery-address challenges from class and clarify concepts you are currently learning.
2. Homework-review classwork, but it must be completed by the student outside of our sessions. This maximizes time efficiency for the student's benefit.
3. Math foundation-look for gaps in core math skills and strengthen them so that transition to future math classes is smooth.

MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY:

Tutoring is providing supplemental assistance to those already taking a math course. You don't magically get an A when you hire a tutor. As your tutor, my goal is to help you achieve that A, however, it is vital that the student must do their part outside of our sessions. I like to be clear about the fact that meeting once or twice a week for an hour is extremely helpful, but student success is a team effort that involves teachers, tutors, students, and parents. As your tutor, my focus is to clarify challenges that students have on their material from class, as well as improve on any foundational gaps from the past. Math is a subject that builds on previous concepts, so it's important to address those gaps. Every student is unique in learning style and capability. Some need more time, and some need less time for tutoring. I am flexible with the needs of the student and can adapt to a variety of learning styles.

ABOUT ME:

I stumbled upon tutoring in the fall of 2010 when a close friend desperately asked me to tutor her for the intermediate algebra college course she was taking. She had failed the class three times and it was the only class she needed to get her AA degree. How frustrating, right?! When I started working with her well into two-thirds of the semester on her fourth attempt, she had an F in the class. By the end of our time together, she had raised her grade to a B. She was so happy! I was so happy for her! To have been able to help my friend on such a huge level inspired me to pursue tutoring professionally. I'm so glad I was able to help her and was proud to be at her graduation ceremony.

Maybe you'll relate to her story. I understand how frustrating it can be to try and decipher a language of numbers, but with practice, dedication, and my help, it can be done. I will make sure to help you build a strong foundation, as this is key to being successful in upper level math classes.

My primary exposure to the home school model is working with my own daughter in elementary school. I have worked with home school families for over 7 years now, focused on the high school math subjects, as that is my area of expertise, and it is usually the most difficult for parents to get through with their children. Additionally, on occasion, I have worked through the core subjects: English, science, and Spanish as a foreign language. Most of the families I have worked with come from Classical Academy and Coastal Academy in North County San Diego.

First Lesson went well

Hoping to see our daughter's confidence in math grow as she works with Rossina. Our daughter came from the lesson motivated and decided to keep studying for her test the following morning.

Amazing

My daughter has had tutors in the past that were a waste of time and money. Both our frustrations were building until Rossina came into our lives. Her style was just the answer my daughter needed. Finally my daughter felt that there was someone who understood how to teach a subject in a way that made it easier for her to understand. Rossina is a blessing to my family.

Excellent tutor, well worth the fee

My son only had 3 weeks to prepare for a Geometry Finals test he was to take at the beginning of August 2013. He had taken the Geometry summer(2012) class the previous summer(after having failed Geometry during the 2012 school year). Unfortunately 9 months later we found out that the class he took was not NCAA approved. But he was offered the chance to retake the Final(basically challenge the course). So after reading the various reviews on other tutors, we had hired Rossina to come and help our son re-study an entire semesters curriculum in 3 weeks. Within that 3 week period Rossina was able to have our son review, then test, then review the chapter/tests and then again retest all the appropriate chapters, so that he had a solid understanding of how to take and pass the Final. Upon receiving the test result, our son's school principal had told him that very few students would have been able to accomplish what he had done within the short period of time he had. While our son was the one to study and take and pass the final, it was Rossina's teaching and tutoring abilities that allowed him to have the knowledge and confidence to do so well in a class he had previously failed. She is an excellent tutor and has a passion to help others to not only reach their goals but to succeed past them.

Great for teenagers!

Rossina has been tutoring my son in Spanish for a month or so. He was having a very difficult time last year and really didn't enjoy Spanish but since his tutoring sessions, he now feels good about his grade. Rossina was very patient and worked with my son in the areas that needed improvement. I highly recommend Rossina. P.S. All tutors can always be reached through Wyzant. Rossina replied to my emails within a few hours.

Very Patient and she is able to connect with my daughter.

As of now, my daughter has nothing but good things to say about her tutor. She is very thorough and gives extra help with gathering material to assist my daughter with learning Geo Trig, so far no complaints, just all good comments of a good job!

The best tutor around! Great with kids!

We have enjoyed getting to know Rossina as she has proven to best the best Spanish teacher for our kids ages 2 and 4. They have been with Rossina for about 4 months and both of my boys are using simple Spanish words and phrases around the house! My 4 year old has already learned a few sentences and both have memorized a couple Spanish songs. If you are considering Rossina for your tutor you can't go wrong! She is very professional and passionate about learning. Thank you Rossina for all that you do to teach our boys!
